Effective Leadership | Part 1 “Heart of a Leader (Myths)”

Episode 1: “A Leader is Chosen” from Seacoast Church on Vimeo.

PURPOSE:  To show you what it means to be an effective leader.  To show that Small Group leadership does not mean you have to be a biblical scholar, a dynamic teacher or outgoing, but have a heart for people and desire to see them grow to their fullest potential in Christ.

Acts 2:42-47 paints a beautiful biblical picture of community.  We read how the early church came together, loved one another, served one another, ate together, took care of each other’s needs and were committed to growth.

MYTH:  A small group leader needs to spend hours in preparation for the meeting.

TRUTH: An effective leader is one who is available; one who serves others and develops relationships.

MYTH: A Small Group Leader must be a super-shepherd; outgoing, bold, strong, having a close relationship with every single person in the group.

TRUTH: You are there to help others connect, helping the group form relationships with each other.  You don’t have to be invited to everything the group does outside of the meeting or have a close relationship to all your members.

MYTH: You have to be a biblical scholar to be an effective leader.

TRUTH: You don’t need to know the Bible inside and out and have every answer, you just need to be teachable.  You need to be willing to grow and to learn. Growing Leaders Grow Leaders.  A Small Group Leader is committed to growing into a fully developed follower of Christ and is willing to take people with them along the way.

Jesus said, in order to be an effective follower of Christ, you need to have a love of God that is strong and passionate.  You are not perfect, but you are going to love Him and are committed to growing in that relationship with Him.  And, you need to love your neighbor as yourself.  You have the desire to love the people God has put into your group; to watch as a community begins to form that is life changing.  When you see people’s lives change, you will see a healthy sense of biblical community.
