KEY VERSE: PSALM 103
Psalm 103 promotes blessing/praising and the exaltation of God. As a Christian, it is hard not to praise God after reading this Psalm. David wrote this Psalm and it is especially encouraging because of all that has happened in his life. He had somewhat of a checkered past. But God can work through anyone, checkered past or not. From God’s perspective, we all have a checkered past. ‘For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). God has freed us from our sin and is ready to work through us when we let him! God can transform anyone, rescue anyone, and equip anyone for his good will.
We can learn from David’s history.
LEARN FROM HISTORY, OTHERWISE YOU’RE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT.
There are many ways we exalt and praise Jesus for what he has given us: forgiveness, life, compassion, grace, mercy, eternal life, etc. Worshipping God is not done at a certain time, it is done with your life.
Romans 12:1 (ESV)
You can get a thorough study of this scripture @Timhatachlive; Season 5, Episode 24.
Ice Breaker:
Q. What are some ways you enjoy worshipping God?
- REAL PRAISE BEGINS WHEN I APPROACH GOD WITH HUMILITY
Psalm 103:1-5 (NLT)
A CALL FOR PERSONAL PRAISE
David’s true desire is to REALLY praise God. He is stirring in his spirit to praise God. David humbled himself before God and all he has done. The text shows us what we need and what God gives. We have been and and need forgiveness. We were dead and needed redemption, we need healing, and He heals, He provides the crown of love and mercy. He fills us with good! We have to stir our spirit and we need to allow the Holy Spirit to stir our spirit to praise God. That is our responsibility.
Q. What are some times you find it difficult to worship where you need to stir your spirit to praise God?
Proverbs 3:34 (NLT); Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)
2. REAL PRAISE IS FREEING WHEN I’M UNRESTRAINED IN PRAISING GOD.
Psalm 103:6-19 (NLT)
A CALL FOR CORPORATE PRAISE
This Psalm was written by a guy that knows how to party for the Lord! He brought 30,000 men to get the Ark of the Covenant of God. King David’s undignified worship in 2 Samuel 6:14 says he leapt and danced before the Lord with all his might.
SHOUT TO THE LORD IN PRAISE
Joshua 6 – the walls of Jericho fell at the shout of God’s people
Judges 7 – Gideon’s enemy lost at the shout of God’s people
Some of us need to shout to the Lord in praise so our walls will come down and for our enemy to be defeated in our life.
Q. What is an example where you had to ‘shout to the Lord’ to defeat a giant in your life?
Psalm 95:1 (NIV); Psalm 98:4-6 (NIV)
3. REAL PRAISE CONTINUES WHEN I ACKNOWLEDGE I NEED A SAVIOR TO RESCUE ME
This Psalm is all about the Rescuer – without Him, we are unable to REALLY praise God.
WE NEED RESCUING EVERY DAY
Jesus isn’t the last puzzle piece to fill the void in our life. Jesus is a Savior, He is a Father, He is the Son of God. He is a Rescuer. Jesus holds the keys of life and death. Humility is knowing our place in the rescuing. We need to be rescued from sin. Sin is the accusation from God, Jesus is the verdict of that accusation. Jesus has dealt with all sin. He is the only One that has done all the rescuing.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)
John 5:24 (ESV)
John 8:36 (ESV)
John 14:6 (ESV)
Q. What is the most powerful way God has shown up in your life?
Q. What parts of Pslam 103 speak to you to the most and why?
By faith in Christ, WE receive and can know all the things David lists in Psalm 103: forgiveness, healing, compassion, mercy, grace, righteousness, steadfast love, and freedom.
REAL PRAISE is known in Christ.
JESUS IS MY RESCUER
Romans 5:6-8 (ESV)
SERMON IN A SENTENCE:
BECAUSE JESUS RESCUES ME, I WILL ALWAYS HAVE AMPLE REAONS TO PRAISE GOD WITH MY LIFE
