Key Verse: 1 Kings 3:
Theme: Wisdom
Summer is a transition season. People are transitioning to the next grade in school, finding a new church etc. We will get to some places where we will feel ill-equipped for the next season of life. We don’t have to have all of our ducks in a row to believe great things from God. Sometimes, we step out in faith and then wonder ‘What have I done‘?
Fact: Everyone eventually comes to a place where they feel ill-equipped for the task ahead.
Our tests are not meant to defeat us. God gives us what we need for each season. Wherever we are now, we are in a place we have never been before. We are in a brand new season even if we don’t recognize it. We have never been this old before, know as many people, been exposed to this many ideas etc. Every moment is a moment we need wisdom because we have never been there before.
Q. What season are you headed into that you feel ill-equipped to do?
God’s candidate for incredible wisdom: Solomon.
1. Solomon OBEYED the Lord INCOMPLETELY.
1 Kings 3:1 (ESV)
Solomon is the tenth born son of King David. Solomon is between the ages of 12 and 20 and he is the king of God’s chosen nation. He knows he needs God to help hm. He made a marriage alliance with the king of Egypt so that foreign king would never invade his kingdom. BUT, Deuteronomy states that a king must not have many wives or go back to Egypt (Deuteronomy 17:17 ESV). Solomon breaks both of those commandments. He is not trusting in the Lord with all of his heart.
Gods candidate for incredible wisdom: Solomon (Me)
Q. When have you obeyed the Lord incompletely (you did what he asked of you but you added something to it or did something else first etc.)?
2. Solomon LOVED the Lord IMPERFECTLY.
We think we need to love the Lord more and he will bless us more. We should not worry about loving the Lord more, we need to just love Him. We will always struggle with our sin nature but one day, Jesus who already paid for our sin, will wipe out the presence of sin in our life for all eternity. We are not there yet.
1 Kings 3:3 (ESV)
Solomon loved the Lord, only he sacrificed and made offerings. Deuteronomy states to break down the altars and smash their sacred stones (Deuteronomy 7:5 ESV). Solomon was going to an old relic from a pagan religion to worship. He is worshipping but no perfectly. We can not wait to step out in faith to obey the Lord. God is using flawed sinners since forever, that is all He can find. This is not permission to amp up your ‘only’.
Q. What is your ‘only’ (you love the Lord but you are envious, gossip etc)?
3. Solomon WORSHIPPED the Lord IGNORANTLY.
1 Kings 3:4 (ESV)
The people of Israel were to go to the Arc of God in a temporary tent, but Solomon went to Gibeon because Moses’s tented meeting was there. But, that was the ‘Moses’ way, (2 Chronicles 1:3-4 ESV). The new way was to be in the Arc in the Tabernacle, but Solomon avoided that. He worshipped ignorantly and did not do everything he was suppose to do.
1 Kings 3:5 (ESV)
Solomon doesn’t have it all together. They were not perfect people as we are not perfect and God chose to be generous to them because that is how good he is. Let’s be the kind of church who loves people who don’t know God like we know him, for this is how we came: uninformed and ignorant.
FACT: If I had my life all together, I wouldn’t need wisdom.
God delights to give unworthy people good gifts because he is good. If we deserved it, there would be no grace.
Q. God showed grace to Solomon even though he was ignorant, how have you recently shown (or how can you show) grace to others who may be ignorant and uniformed?
1. Finding wisdom happens when I confess God’s SOVEREIGNTY in MY SITUATION.
Wisdom for our situation is acknowledging that God is in charge of our situation. God brings us to a season and He is sovereign over that season.
1 Kings 3:6-7 (ESV)
We need to say this also, ‘God you did this.’ God has been working with the mess of human manipulation since Genesis chapter 3 and he is sovereign. If he brought you here he will bring you through it.
Q. What recent situation has God sovereignly brought you to and through?
It doesn’t matter what got me here. God has me here and I’m here for a PURPOSE.
Q. How has God sovereignly moved you to a place for his purposes using ways you did not necessarily like ?(Pastor Tim gave this example: He was a youth minister which he did not like, so when the opportunity came to leave that, he became the pastor of NA. He did not hear a voice from God, but God used something he did not like to bring him to a place where he is serving the purpose that God had for him. Maybe for you , you married the wrong person, made some sort of mistake, bought the wrong house , moved to the wrong neighborhood etc.).
2. Finding wisdom happens when I address my own INCAPACITY for my STATION.
1 Kings 3:7b (ESV)
Solomon’s father was a master war general, King David. Solomon probably thought he could not live up to his dad’s expertise. David was there for a season of war and Solomon was there for a season of peace. We don’t have to be like everyone else or live up to someone else’s level because God knows what he is doing. Just tell God you don’t know and ask for wisdom. We need wisdom for our season.
1 Corinthians 3:18–19 (NLT)
We don’t have to live up to this worlds standards. We need the wisdom God wants us to have for our season.
Q. How have you tried to live up to someone else’s expertise and failed?
3. Finding wisdom happens when I offer my SERVICE to God for the CONGREGATION.
1 Kings 3:8-9 (ESV)
Where ever we are we are to serve Gods people. The Lord will open doors. We should be willing to serve where he puts us. We can serve God anywhere, we don’t have to be employed by the church. We are to let God use us where we are to serve his people. We are ambassadors for Christ as though God is making his appearance through us.
1 Corinthians 3:5 (ESV)
Q. How have you gained wisdom from serving others?
When you embrace a “SERVING GOD” mentality, you always SUCCEED, because God’s work NEVER FAILS.
Proverbs 25:21–22 (ESV)
4. Finding wisdom happens when I enter God’s PRESENCE through SALVATION.
1 Kings 3:15 (ESV)
God told his people he would always be over the Ark. When Solomon really gained God’s wisdom, it brought him into Gods presence and brought him into where God dwelt. Jesus is our final offering and laid down his life so we could have the wisdom of God.
1 Corinthians 1:20–24 (ESV)
