Key Verse: Ephesians 6

The world fights about everything all of the time.  The year 2020 began with fighting about the president, COVID, lockdowns and mandates, masks, social issues, presidential election, and we are going through 2021 with the same fighting including shipping issues, vaccines, president, governor, and employer mandates etc.

Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)

The fight isn’t against people, policies or social influencers.  The fight is spiritual.  Christians fight but some don’t fight properly and some do.  Some of us fight in our own strength trying to beat the world with the world.  Some of us fight God’s way, in faith, beating the world with the power of the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Christians fight too but it looks strange to the world around them.

Examples: Gideon taking less men to battle, Jericho soldiers walking in silence around the city, Paul in prison, Peter rescued from prison after church prayed earnestly and Jesus fought sin, death, and grave for us.

Ice-breaker question:

Q. What other examples in the Bible can you think of where fighting may have looked odd to the world?

  1. The whole armor of God begins with the strength of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:10-12 (ESV); John 16:33 (ESV)

Bitterness and exhaustion come from reliance on personal strength rather than Divine strength.

Q. What areas of your life lack reliance on God’s strength?

Psalm 18:1-3 (ESV); Psalm 28:7-8 (ESV) Psalm 46:1 (ESV); Romans 16:25 (ESV); Colossians 1:11-14 (ESV); 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 (ESV); 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (ESV)

2. The whole armor of God changes my perspective.

Ephesians 6:13-17 (ESV)

All the pieces of the armor of God are not our own.  We are simply told to put it on and use it.  The pieces are the Lord’s!  We put on the Lord’s truth, the Lord’s righteousness, the Lord’s Gospel of peace, faith in the Lord, the Lords’s salvation, and the Lord’s word.  We are not responsible for maintaining these items, we are responsible for putting them on.

Belt of Truth (Gospel) for Protection

Colossians 1:5 (ESV)

Breastplate of Righteousness (Justified – righteousness of God is the source or author) for Protection

Shoes Readiness (Preparation – foundation | our foundation is the Gospel of peace) for Protection

Shield of Faith (Faith, belief, trust, confidence; fidelity, faithfulness | our shield is our faith in Christ) for Protection

Helmet of Salvation (God’s salvation – emphasizing the direct application of God’s salvation | salvation protects the mind/thoughts/dreams) for Protection

Sword of the Spirit (Word of God) – our Weapon

Romans 10:17 (ESV)

Q. Which of these pieces of armor are missing or you feel are the hardest to put on?

3. The whole armor of God changes my prayer life.

Ephesians 6:18-20 (ESV)

Verse 18 breakdown to change our prayer life:

“At all times” = frequency

“In the Spirit” = submission as we align with God’s will

“With all prayer and supplication” = variety

“Keep alert” = manner

“All perseverance” = persistence

“All the saints” = objects (who)

Who is this for: Christians

Who do we pray for: all the saints

What do we pray: all prayer and supplication

Where: in the Spirit

When do we pray: at all times

How do we pray: on alert and with all perseverance

We put not he armor of God and pray so that we can stand against the enemy scheming against us.

Q. What is your prayer life like (what might be lacking in your prayer life)?

We are to pray for our pastors and Spiritual leaders.  We are to pray for our pastors so they may boldly proclaim the mystery of the Gospel. We pray for our leaders to rely on the strength of the Lord and put on the armor of God so they are able to stand against the schemes of the enemy.

Romans 12:12 (ESV); Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV); 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV)

SERMON IN SENTENCE:

In Christ I am strong, I am able to put on the Amor of God to stand against the schemes of the enemy and I am able to pray at all times in the Spirit.

Challenge: Read and memorize Ephesians 6:13-17  and lean on the Holy Spirit’s help in doing battle for the kingdom of God daily.
