Power Up Week 2 Power of the Name of Jesus
Key Verse: John 14:13 (NKJV)
The early church in Acts is our model church. Jesus chose a few ordinary men and taught and trained them to continue His work. When He rose from the dead, he returned to these men and He breathed on these men for them to receive the Spirit. The disciples were born again of God’s Spirit. On The Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was given. Never think that you don’t have certain gifts and abilities that God can use through you. God chose an ordinary fisherman, tax collector etc. They were used when they had an encounter with Jesus.
Ice breaker: Q: Can you tell the group about when you had an encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ? (Leaders if you have members in your group that are not saved tell them you will give them the opportunity to have an encounter with Jesus).
The men Jesus chose were ordinary men and that is the way God always works, He chooses ordinary people and they are used by His spirit.
Q: When do you feel like you are just ordinary and cannot be used by God? What gifts and abilities are you hesitant to use for God, and what is holding you back?
Q. What gifts are you currently using to encourage others in your group to do the same?
Matthew 28:16-20
The Great Commission: these men must’ve understood that they could not do that on their own strength. God gave them the power. There is no such thing as laity and clergy when it comes to God using His people to work toward the Great Commission. He must continue His work through his spiritual “body”, the church. The church must continue to do what Jesus did; everyone must be involved in the Great Commission.
3 Sources of Power:
God’s Word, Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the Name of Jesus. God gives us the dunamis power (Greek: dynamite) to equip us to
- God’s Word:
Hebrews 4:12
sharper than any 2 edged sword, discerns the faults and intents of a man’s heart
Isaiah 55:10-11
never returns void.
1 Peter 1:25 The word of the Lord endures forever.
Cherish and meditate on the word of God.
Q: How can you increase your time spent in God’s word? ( Discuss with one another ways we can encourage each other to read the Bible).
Q. What are your Bible reading habits?
- Baptism of the Holy Spirit:
Acts 2 (The Day of Pentecost) They were praising God in all the languages that were there that day. When we praise God, we praise from our innermost being. We need the baptism of the Holy Spirit or we will fail. Get baptized so you can have power to overcome!
Q: If you have sought after the baptism of the Holy Spirit, can you give a testimony of what being filled with the Holy Spirit had enabled you to overcome or use for God’s kingdom?
Q. What is holding you back from seeking after the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
- The Name of Jesus; saves, heals and casts out demons
God the father must get all the glory. God the Son must have the preeminence (Jesus is first in everything).
Salvation in the name of Jesus
Philippians 2:10-11
Acts 4:12
Romans 10:13
Healing in the Name of Jesus
Acts 3:1-9
Peter and John (2 ordinary men) go to the temple and find a lame man outside the temple. Scripture: healed instantly The people around were astonished.
Demons are cast out: Even the demons are subject to the name of Jesus.
Acts 16:16-18 (Paul cast out demons from a slave girl)
The reality is that people are still demon possessed but Jesus can set them free.
There is power in the name of Jesus. Power to live right, power to walk straight and power to be bold in the Kingdom of God. Be bold!
Challenge: Intentionally pursue your relationship with God through His word. Actively use the power of the Holy Spirit to live with a sense of mission for others.
