Key Verse: John 16
We are seeing a power panic right now in the world. We panic about physical power because are so low on spiritual power. God does not want us powerless. We need the power of Jesus. We need the power of the Holy Spirit. We can have more of God in our lives. We can have power through the Holy Spirit and God can change our lives.
John 16:7
The Holy Spirit is our helper and he calls out to us. God wants to speak to us right now. This is what Jesus came to do. It is better to have the Holy Spirit in us than Jesus beside us.
Jesus died and rose to FILL me with the POWER of the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel is so much more than us being forgiven and going to heaven. There is something for us to do. It is not about getting out of this life and going to heaven, it is letting heaven come into us so we can bring joy, peace, love and change the world no matter who or where we are.
Q. How is the Holy Spirit using you currently to bring peace and joy in to someones life?
We are ambassadors to heaven. We are spiritual beings. We have a longing for something beyond us. That is why people turn to other things for that desire to be filled. We know we need a spiritual life inside of us and if we are not ready the devil will give us a counterfeit. Jesus shed His blood to give us the real thing. He went out of His way to give us a special gift, the Holy Spirit.
Q. Knowing that Jesus went out of His way for us, how, with the help of the Holy Spirit, can you go out of your way for someone in your life right now that needs Jesus? (That one that is believing the counterfeit, or That someone that you don’t ‘think’ is worthy, or that person that drives you crazy etc..)
John 16:16-20 (ESV)
What Jesus is talking about is – in just a moment I am about to be arrested and taken away, and put on a cross. For few days he is going into the grave and the disciples are going to think this movement is all over. They felt absolute sorrow that Jesus was dead and gone. But on the third day he rose again!
John 20:12 (ESV)
Exodus 25:17, 19 (ESV); Leviticus 16:15–16 (ESV)
This is a picture in the Old Testament pointing to the finished work of Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, He took His blood into the heavenly mercy seat and washed away our sin so God could dwell with us.
John 20:16–17 (ESV)
Jesus was becoming our final perfect High Priest.
Leviticus 16:17 (ESV)
The priest had to be untouched by anybody else and offer the sacrifice. This is all point to something.
John 20:17 (ESV)
Jesus was doing something that was prophesied in the Old Testament.
Luke 24:39 (ESV)
This day he had said ‘Touch me, and see’ where before, on this same day he said: ‘Don’t touch me.’ What had happened is that Jesus completed the work of our atonement.
Hebrews 9:11–12 (ESV)
He took his blood to the altar to heaven and brought it to the Father and redeemed us.
John 20:20–22 (ESV)
Jesus is re-doing what Adam undid. Through the finished work He brings us back to life
Genesis 2:7 (ESV)
God himself has com to dwell inside us.
John 14:15–17 (ESV)
The Holy Spirit is the power for all the other powers we have talked about in this series.
1 – The Holy Spirit helps us RECEIVE and UNDERSTAND The Word of God.
There is power in the word of God. The bible can be hard to understand. There is a power available to help us understand it. When we are born again God gives a hunger for the word and it starts to speak to us. The Bible is Holy Spirit inspired. The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible. When he is in us we have the author of the Bible with us to help us to understand the Bible. We have the author ready to help us understand!
Q. How can you leverage (or how have you leveraged) this awesome reality with something you may be struggling to understand right now?
1 Corinthians 2:12–13 (ESV)
2 – The Holy Spirit helps us PRAY in HARMONY with God’s WILL
We need power to pray when we don’t know what to pray for.
Romans 8:26–27 (NLT)
The Holy Spirit prays for us. He prays in accordance with God’s will. Sometimes we may be frustrated in what God is praying for because it may differ from what we are praying for.
Q. How has the Holy Spirit helped you pray when you were not sure what to pray for?
3 – The Holy Spirit CONVINCES us of the Power of JESUS’ NAME
Acts 3:6 (ESV)
There is power in the Name of Jesus. When the Holy Spirit is filled in our lives, we don’t take His name lightly. We can cast out demons in His name. When we have the fullness of the Holy Spirit in our lives we pray with expectancy in the name of Jesus.
Q. How do you or can you pray with expectancy?
4 – The Holy Spirit LIFTS my HEART so that I PRAISE through my PROBLEMS.
We have power to praise through our problems. We can praise Him because we know He is always going to provide and protect us.
Ephesians 5:18–20 (ESV)
The Holy Spirit filled heart is a singing heart. God wants us walking in victory! He is greater and no weapon formed against us shall prosper!
Q. What evidence do you see that your life is controlled by the Holy Spirit (are you praising through your problems or blaming others for them, are you walking in victory or defeat etc..)?
5 – The Holy Spirit UNITES the Church in PEACE and COMMUNITY.
We love the Church when we are filled with the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit loves the Church. People can’t make us love the church, only the Holy Spirit can help us love the Church. Hs gives us a bond with each other. We can meet other Christians around the world and immediately see each other as family because we see the Holy Spirit inside each other.
Q. What experience have you had meeting a complete stranger and immediately had a connection with them because you saw the Holy Spirit in them?
Ephesians 4:3 (ESV)
6 – The Holy Spirit inspires WORDS that CONVICT the sinner’
ENCOURAGE the broken, BUILD UP the Church.
The Holy Spirit can take over our tongues and change what comes out of us. Our problems are not the result of the society around us or what others have done to us. Apart form Christ we were lost but the light shines in the dark and through the words of people filled with the Holy Spirit. Conviction comes to our hearts and we realize our sin is our problem.
1 Corinthians 12:7–11 (ESV)
Series in Conclusion:
The Holy Spirit is the POWER of God in YOU to empower good works THROUGH you.
Challenge: Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you – to give you power to understand His word, Praise through the storms, pray with expectancy, pray His will, build others up, and convict you of your sin.
The Author of the Bible is with you, ask Him to help you understand.
