Key Verse: Matthew 8

Matthew 8:1-3

In those days leprosy was very common.  Lepers were cast out, they had to leave their homes and families and live on the outskirts of town with other sufferers.  They had to scavenge for food.  They were outcasts, sick, hungry, and had low self esteem.  They were not aloud to come in contact with anyone that did not have leprosy themselves.  They had to ring a bell and shout ‘unclean, unclean’.

Q. How have you felt emotionally or spiritually like this leper?

He manages to say, even though he believed the lies, ‘Lord if you will, you can make me clean.’ Jesus healed him instantly even though he probably did not think he would be healed.  There are people in our families that have such profound struggles we don’t even know about.   We must be careful with our words because we often don’t know what people are going through.

Q. What is a time when you had no faith or very little faith to believe you or someone else would be healed, but was miraculously healed?

Matthew 8:5-7

The centurion is completely opposite from the leper.  He is well known, had hundreds of soldiers beneath him.  He was someone who is used to making rules and used to deciding things, but in this case he was totally helpless to solve the problem.  He cared for this servant and wanted him to be healed.  He could help his soldiers but not his own servant.  He had only heard of Jesus, but had never seen him. Unlike the leper who was a Jew, he had no understanding of who Jesus was.

Today, we might be like the centurion, not lacking anything. Our lives might be great, marriage, job, and boss are good, etc. However, we may have a situation we have no control over as the centurion had no control in regard to his servant’s situation.

Q. If you are more like the centurion, what is the one situation you absolutely have no control over that you need to give to Jesus?

Even if we wake up not facing troubles, they will come because that is the way the world and life works.  A saint is nothing more than a sinner saved by grace.

Paul the apostle has seen it all and still at the end of his life he writes:

Romans 7:15-20; 24

Paul writes in Ephesians 3:8 he is the least of all sinners.  The irony is that the longer we walk with Christ, the closer we get to the Holy Spirit, the more we are aware we become of how sinful we are.

Q. What is something you may have not been convicted about earlier in your walk that maybe now you are because you are closer to Christ?

We must not let what is self-made or put on from the outside define us.  There are things we wrestle with, if we receive what Christ has done for us, we are new creations.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Q. What is something you are letting define you even though you are a new creation in Christ?

Jesus heard the cry of both the leper and the centurion.  They were different but equally valid and he met their needs and solved their problems instantly. He interacted with each of them directly.  He did not say: ‘I will pray for you’ and walk away as we sometimes do.

God made the Gospel simple, if he did not do that we would not stand a chance.  We are made in the image of God.  We live in a world where more image is given to the way we look and not the image of God. He took all of our infirmity, all of our sin and that is why He has the authority and the right to heal us.  It is zero percent us and one hundred percent Jesus.

We need him way more now than ever before and as we grow and understand God, we realize it is literally impossible to live like Jesus without the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 8:16-18

Challenge: Tell Jesus what your need is and trust Him to heal you.
