Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 15
-pray for land for this church
The Gospel is the power of God unto Salvation. Romans 1:16
The Church is for the glory of God. God has built his Church on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So many times we forget the Gospel. We may think it is our one way ticket to heaven and then we move on from the Gospel. BUT, we never move on from the Gospel. It is the Gospel that gets us in the door, keeps us in the door, and it is the hope for not matter what comes through that door. We have got to know the Gospel, for the Gospel is the hope of the world!
1 Corinthians 15:1–2 (ESV)
Even the first century Church needed to remember the Gospel of Jesus. The Church of Corinth was messed up. God came to take people who were messed up and sinful, and heal them. He came to change us, transform us, and heal us. Paul needed to remind them, just like we need to be reminded of what God has done, if we forget that we will lose the power and the impetuous to do what God wants us to do.
Q. In what ways might you have become apathetic to the Gospel?
False Gospel #1. The “GOD-SHAPED HOLE” Gospel.
Luke 19:10 (ESV); Colossians 3:15 (ESV); 1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)
Our life is not ‘almost there’ and then Jesus comes along to plug the hole of our hearts. The Bible never tells us to invite Jesus into our hearts. He already owns us from the day we were conceived. We did not find Jesus, He found us, He chose us. He worked behind the scenes to get us to the point of surrendering to Him. Christianity is a whole heart surrender to Him not just certain things we need Him to do for us.
Q. What are some things in your life that you still need to surrender to Him (money, family, career etc.)?
False Gospel #2. The “LIFE-IMPROVEMENT” Gospel
The Bible is not about us, it is about Jesus. It is not about us having a better life or finding our destiny. He is not some supernatural special assistant to our dreams. We are His people and He has a plan and purpose for us. Sometimes following Christ will not improve some parts of our life.
Q. What relationships or areas of your life where there is friction because of your relationship with Christ?
False Gospel #3. The “HIGHER POWER” Gospel
Watch out for this Gospel. Not everyone, but some people get addicted to recovery and before you know it the whole things is about getting over that addiction. What we win people with is what we keep people with. If someone only comes to Christ because they want to get over and addiction, what happens when the addiction is no longer there?
Q. What may be something you needed to get over and made that the reason for coming to Christ and at what point did you realize that Christianity was more than that?
Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV); Matthew 12:33 (ESV)
False Gospel #4. The “RED LETTER” Gospel
This Gospel says don’t listen to the whole Bible because some of it is offensive so just go to the red letters. Just listen to the words of Jesus and we will be good or we ask what would Jesus do. We are not Jesus, we need Him, He changes us but doing what He did is impossible. It’s not doing what He did, it is trusting what He did.
Matthew 5:48 (ESV)
Q. What might be parts of the Bible might you be picking and choosing from?
False Gospel #5. The “PATRIOTIC” Gospel
America is not God’s chosen nation. The Israelites are God’s chosen nation. In the Bible, there is not one promise to America. If we fall for this, we will believe we have to take back America for God. There is only one nation that will last until Jesus comes and it is the people that belong to Him.
Understanding the Gospel:
- Christ SATISFIED the DEMANDS of the LAW.
Matthew 5:17 (ESV)
All the Old Testament rules and laws, no one could do them except Jesus.
Romans 10:4 (ESV)
We just need to believe. No more sacrifices, because Jesus was the final sacrifice. We are only perfect (Matthew 5:48) when we stop trusting our record and trust His record. It is a promise when we trust in Christ, His righteousness becomes our righteousness and now God sees us as he sees his Son.
Q. How does knowing this give you confidence in your Christian walk?
2. Christ ENDURED the WRATH of God.
God is angry, angry with the wicked everyday. We don’t like the wrath of God because we want him to be cute and cuddly. Our own kids make us angry at what they do sometimes. Things they do to hurt themselves make us angry. Like a child who does not listen when you tell him not to run into traffic. We would most likely, as parents, run in and stop traffic for them and that is what Christ did for us.
Isaiah 53:6 (ESV); 1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)
3. Christ is the FINAL SACRIFICE for SIN.
There is no more sacrifices. He is the final payment, the final sacrifice.
1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV)
4. Christ RANSOMED us to GOD.
Ransom involves payment. What Christ did was He paid for us to come back to the Father. We are not just his creation we are His purchased possession. He bought is from sin and bought us from Hell and ransomed us back to Himself.
Mark 10:45 (ESV)
5. Christ ROSE in triumph over DEATH.
1 Corinthians 15:12-14 (ESV)
If there is no resurrection there is no point to this movement.
Romans 6:9–11 (ESV); 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 (ESV)
The grace of God changes us. Only He has the power to resurrect us. We can make all the agreements and deals we want with ourselves, but we don’t have the power to raise our body from the dead, only He does and He only honors His agreement.
Q. What deals have you tried to make with yourself thinking it would be good enough to get you to heaven?
TWO RESULTS from the GOSPEL:
1. I don’t DESERVE this.
2. I CHANGE from this.
This Week’s Challenge: Reflect on what the Gospel truly means and live like you believe it.
