Last week:
- Happiness does not just HAPPEN.
- The right HABITS make happiness happen.
This week:
- Habits do not START as habits.
- Habits have always been a part of our lives; habits shapes who you are. Habits start with “that sounds like a good idea” or someone says, “hey have you ever thought of?”
Introduction:
Pastor Tim’s illustration about listening to others advice: “You should get a boxer puppy” changed his habits. He now has to walk, take care of, clean up after, feed these new puppies etc. His habits changed because of listening to someone’s suggestion.
Who you are listening to today that will radically change your life tomorrow. It is in what we hear from friends, critics that lead to habits. Habits are formed by what we hear.
American Habits: These habits exist because of who America listens to.
- #1 country that eats fast food
- Spends the most money on Black Friday all over the world
- Addicted more than any other country to social media
- Watch more TV
Our lives are dominated by TWO voices:
- Voice inside us (trusting your gut)
- Voice of others (how we should live; what to buy, what to look like)
WE adjust our lives into the opinions and the conformity of the patterns of others around us. Scripture says not to let that happen. The world tells us to live according to your own rules, be different, be a rebel; but the irony is that the world all looks the same. (two-faced)
Don’t end up living a life that you are sickened by, but one you are glad that you gave your heart and life to God.
FACT: IT IS A VERY UNHAPPY THING TO LIVE SOMEONE ELSES LIFE.
Q. Have you ever desired to live some else’s life and why? What do you find glamorous about their life only to realize it is not so glamorous?
Steve Jobs, “Your time is limited so don’t waste your life living someone else’s.”
Psalm 1 is the Intro to the Psalms. Very first word is “blessed” translated “happy”.
Delight means to long; The word law in Hebrew is Torah: (the instructions of God) His word is instruction for life
Pool rules don’t help us swim, they tell us what we can’t do; don’t run, no diving etc. A swimming instructor teaches us how to master the water. Keeps us from drowning. How to glide through the water. Think of God’s word like the swimming instructor not the pool rules: God’s law is not “rules’ but instructions on how to master life. He is the One that cares about us and doesn’t want us living under the water. He wants us gliding through the courses and atmosphere of our life
Where we are ‘drowning’ is where God wants to speak to us.
Q. Where are you drowning?
(Leader, here is an opportunity to help members find scripture in areas in which they might be drowning and also to pray for those areas in your prayer time).
Financially: Financial Peace; Relational: Get into God’s word for marriages; Business Leaders: Get into God’s word – Proverbs wisdom on business principles (and life).
Three things in Psalms 1:3 1.) yields its fruit in season 2.) leaf does not wither 3.) he prospers
The devil works in short-term pleasure long-term pain. God works the opposite; short-term pain long-term pain.
We are not the people who listens to our hearts, we are not the people who listens to everybody, We are the people who listens to the Creator.
“With long life I will SATISFY him and show him My salvation.”
