Key Verse: Nehemiah 10 (ESV)

Ice Breaker Question: What is one tradition or habit passed down in your family through generations?

Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for gathering us today. As we explore the commitments that bring generational blessings, help us to understand Your Word and apply it in our lives. May our discussion open our hearts to the paths You have set for us for the sake of our future generations. Amen.

****************************************

A Generational Blessing is where you can bless your offspring you may never meet.

It happens with one word: Commitment.

Nehemiah 9:38 (ESV), Nehemiah 10:1-2 (ESV)

COMMITMENTS are supposed to be PUBLIC.

Luke 9:26 (ESV)

The COMMITMENTS that BLESS your GREAT GRANDKIDS:

1. BE OBEDIENT to God’s Word

Nehemiah 10:28–29 (ESV)

Commitment to God’s word is not an optional part of your life; it is the central part of your life.

Q. How can committing to God’s Word as a central part of our lives influence the spiritual legacy we leave for future generations?

Practical Application: Can you identify one area where you can improve your obedience to God? Make a plan to implement this change and share your progress with a trusted friend or family member for accountability.

2. UPHOLD the FAITH in your FAMILY

Nehemiah 10:30 (ESV)

They refuse to commit to intermarry with the nations around them.

1 Kings 11:3 (ESV) – from this moment on, the rot began.  Israel never recovered.

Q. How can you, as a family, make faith a more integral part of your daily life?

Or

Q. How can committing to NOT engage in actions against God’s will strengthen your family’s faith and integrity?

Practical Application: Create a family faith chart where members can add what they did each day to nurture their faith. This might include prayer, reading scripture, or helping a neighbor. Review it together at the end of the week.

3. INVEST meaningful TIME with God

Nehemiah 10:31 (ESV) – (this is a commitment to the Sabbath day).

Six days WITH GOD is more PROFITABLE than seven days WITHOUT GOD.

Genesis 2:1-2 (ESV)

Your commitment to God’s HOUSE undergirds a generational blessing.

Nehemiah 10:34 (ESV)

Is the FIRE still BURNING?

What things might take precedence over the house of God?

Q. How can we ensure God is a priority in our busy schedules?  Can you share ways you ensure God is a priority?

Practical Application: Schedule a daily “appointment” with God in your planner or digital calendar. Treat this time as non-negotiable, the same as you would a work meeting or doctor’s appointment.

4. Lay DOWN Your FINANCES

Nehemiah 10:32–33 (ESV) – this verse describes the standard temple tax described in the law.

Exodus 30:16 (ESV)

Nehemiah 10:35-37 (ESV) – The first fruits are an act of faith by which the people of Israel gave the first of everything they received back to God.

Nehemiah 10:38 (ESV) – the Levites tithed on the tithe.  Godly leadership never asks God’s people to do what they are unwilling to do

Q. How does faithfully managing our finances according to God’s principles affect our spiritual life and community?

Practical Application: Commit to stewardship by aligning your financial practices with God’s principles. Begin by dedicating the first portion of your income to God’s work as a tangible expression of faith and financial integrity.

5. DEVOTE Yourself to God’s HOUSE

Nehemiah 10:39 (ESV) – they don’t want to neglect God’s house again.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)

It is time to commit.  Someone you have never met is counting on you.

Consider ‘Schindler’s List’-  It features a German industrialist named Oscar Schindler, who is war profiteering during World War 2. Then, he saw Jews being carted off onto trains and concentration camps. He decided to do whatever he could to hire as many Jews as possible to spare them from extinction. He lost his fortune and notoriety. You get to the end of the movie, and he’s surrounded by all the Jews he saved. And he starts to realize how much more he could have done. The ring on his finger – 2 people. The shirt on his back – 1 person. The BMW he’s about to drive off in – 10 people. He cries out, “I could have done so much more.” Ben Kingsley, his assistant, consoles him, asks him to look around, and says … “Mr Schindler, you don’t understand; generations from these people are saved because of you.”

Practical Application: Practical Application: Actively participate in the life of your church by finding roles that leverage your unique abilities and interests. If you’re already involved, consider expanding your impact by mentoring new members or taking on additional responsibilities to enrich the community further. This commitment not only supports your spiritual home but also ensures it thrives for future generations who are depending now.

Key Takeaways:

Three Key Takeaways: What are the three main insights you gained from this discussion, and what steps will you take to implement these insights in your daily life?

Closing Prayer: Lord, we thank You for the wisdom Your Word provides us. Help us to be obedient, uphold our faith within our families, invest our time wisely with You, manage our finances with integrity, and devote ourselves to Your house. May our actions inspire and bless those around us and those who will come after us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
