Key Verse: Matthew 25:35-46

Question: What does a Last Day Church look like?

Answer #3: GENUINE

In the final days Jesus will separate the sheep (genuine Christians) from the goats (fake Christians). All nations, all human kind will be judged.  Judgment is not only mentioned in the book of Revelation, but it is also mentioned throughout the four Gospels.

We live in a culture where the word ‘judgement’ has a negative tone. ‘Don’t judge me’, ‘Alls the Church does is judge’, ‘Who are you to judge?’  People are not inclined to hear this type of message.   However, all human kind will be judged.

Ice-breaker:

Q. How might have you judged someone and were wrong about your judgement or how might you have been wrongly judged?

The sheep are genuine Christians saved by faith not through works.  The goats are fake Christians who work to try to earn their salvation.  The Gospel is not a works oriented Gospel despite the noise inside or outside the Church.  It is not an ‘I am a good person’ or social justice Gospel.

FOUR FACTS THAT THIS IS NOT TEACHING US SALVATION BY WORKS:

1. Inheritance is passed down not earned (Matthew 25:34 ESV)

2. Inheritance is prepared from eternity and not recent fabrication (Matthew 25:34)

3. Salvation by works contradicts the consistent teaching of the rest of the NT (Matthew 7:21-23 NLT) (John 3:16)

4. Fruit is evidence of the root (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)

James 2:18-20 (ESV)

Faith is first and works spring out of faith.  It is the quality of faith not quantity that matters.  Faith comes from God in the first place.

Q. What are some ways you have got stuck on the false thinking that your good works earns you salvation?

  1. GENUINE CHRISTIANS BEAR FRUIT CONSISTENT WITH THE ROOT

Fruit is the evidence we have been saved.  An apple tree is not an apple tree because it produces apples it produces apples because it is an apple tree.

MATTHEW 25:35-36 (ESV)

When Jesus is our root we become like him. The fruit does not reflect on us, it reflects on Him (the Root). We do good works because of Him.

MATTHEW 5:16 (ESV); 1 TIMOTHY 6:18 (NLT)

Q. What might be some areas in your life that are not producing good fruit or any fruit (inconsistencies where the fruit does not reflect the Root)?

2. GENUINE CHRISTIANS BELIEVE EVERYONE MATTERS

MATTHEW 25:37-40 (ESV)

This does not mean that every feeling, or choice, or belief, or cause that people champion needs to be rallied and supported.  But, the outcast, those on the outskirts of society, the genuinely marginalized person, ‘one of those’ people that struggle, are broken, that fail so many times and look unredeemable, it is those people that are the ‘least of these.’

How do we demonstrate genuine love for God?

Answer: Love people GENUINELY.

This is what separates the sheep from the goats.  Like fruit, looks don’t matter. Some are fake.  Some are bad.

THREE SIGNS OF FAKE CHRISTIANS:

1. Fake Christians practice preferential treatment (example: celebrity culture).

2. Fake Christians act differently around others (different version of us in and out of church).

3. Fake Christians don’t produce fruit (works oriented, but when rubber hits the road they are gone – walk away from the works because the root is not there).

Genuine Christians will fail but that does not make us fake.  We fail, we repent and ask God to help us and  receive help from our brothers and sisters.

James 2:1-4 (ESV); Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)

Q. How would your behavior change if you treated each person in your life as if he or she were Jesus?

3. GENUINE CHRISTIANS WILL GIVE WHATEVER IS REQUIRED

Q. What does a ‘giving whatever is required’ Christian look like? Not look like?

Genuine Christian Giving is an Act of Worship.

The act of worship glorifies the Creator.  It is not about the person giving  or receiving the giving, it is about glorifying God.

Sermon in a sentence:

THE GENUINE CHRISTIAN IS TRANSFORMED FROM THE ROOT BY GRACE, BEARS GOOD FRUIT THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT, BELIEVES EVERYONE MATTERS TO GOD, AND GIVES SACRIFICIALLY TO THE CHURCH FOR THE CHURCH!

Challenge: Demonstrate your love for God in your actions this week and give sacrificially (some examples: help at the Providence Rescue Mission, give toward Tiverton, help a neighbor etc.)
