WHAT IS WORTH OUR WORSHIP?
Key Verse: Romans 1:19-25 NLT
Every single person worships something. Even those who do not believe in God worship something. Those of us who do believe worship differently – example: some raise hands, others don’t etc. But worship is so much more than us singing or raising our hands in church.
English definition of Worship: The feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity (a god).
Worship derives from something you put as a god or ruler of your life.
When people worship in vain, it means that they do it for nothing. Those who say one thing but deep-down mean something else. Worship starts in the heart.
3 THINGS ABOUT WHAT IS WORTH US WORSHIPPING
1: WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO WORSHIP YOU WILL ALSO SERVE
Paul is clearly saying that what we worship we will also serve. We may think that it does not matter what we worship but in reality, whatever that is, is also what we serve.
Q. What or who have you worshipped and served (past or present) other than God and why? Have you ever worshipped God in vain (doing it for no real reason other than maybe because you ‘have’ to?
2: GOD’S POSITIONING IN OUR LIFE DETERMINES HOW WE USE THE BLESSINGS IN OUR LIFE. (Keep the creator above the created things).
We can’t change God’s position (Hebrews 13:8).
Paul is also saying in Romans 1:25 that they traded truth about God for a lie. We are not to worship created things, but we are to worship God.
Q. What truths about God have you traded for a lie because of the way you positioned God in your life?
Sacrifice refers to the Old Testament way of worshipping. They sacrificed animals to show reverence to God and for the redemption of sin. However, we no longer need to sacrifice animals because God sent Jesus to die for us. He is the Perfect living sacrifice.
Everything God has blessed us with is to be used for His glory.
3: JOY IS COMPLETED IN OUR HEARTS WHEN WE PRAISE AND WORSHIP THE SOURCE, JESUS.
God does not have any needs and does not need us to worship and praise him. Worship and praise is for our benefit. It is natural for us to praise what we like and it gives us joy and heightens the excitement when we praise it. Praising God should give us joy and heighten our excitement for Him.
Q. When you praise God, do you find that it gives you true joy and how does that compare to when you praise something or someone else? (Example might be a football game or a spouse/child etc.)
He is the source of all joy, peace and love. All we have been striving for all our lives is Jesus. If you are not worshipping Him, you are not truly serving Him.
Pray for each other, the lost, campuses, nation and leaders.
