Question: Why do Christians WANT to see MORE PEOPLE become CHRISTIANS?
Answer: Because JESUS IS THE ONE.
John Chapter 6 has several amazing stories. Twenty-thousand people are following Jesus by this chapter. Jesus multiplies fishes and loaves and feeds five-thousand families, He calmed the seas when his disciples were caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilea. Jesus is taking them on a guided tour through the Old Testament showing the Jews that all the stories about Moses, Solomon, and David were not about them but about the True Moses, Solomon, and David which is Jesus Himself. At the end of John chapter 6, Jesus’s followers went from twenty-thousand to twelve. Those that left only wanted the miracles and the power but not the Person. They missed the fact that those who come to Him have everlasting life. Jesus was telling them that all these signs were pointing to Him but they wanted the blessings not the Blesser. It is not about what God can give us or what we want, it is about knowing the One who made us and died for us and is coming back for us!
John 5:39 (NLT) “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!”
Ice-breaker :
Q. Who do you think you would have been back in John Chapter 6 (more like those that stayed and followed or more like those that only followed for what they could get?
JESUS is the ONE
1. Jesus is the One When I REALIZE that TEMPORARY SATISFACTIONS are ONLY TEMPORARY.
There is only One that can deliver happiness and that is Jesus. When life runs out of gas we are to turn to the One that made the oil to begin with. Satisfaction eventually loses it’s flavor.
John 6:25-27 (ESV)
They were looking for free bread not for Jesus. Jesus knows their thoughts. He knows they just wanted bread, temporary satisfaction. Anything outside of Christ in this life perishes.
Numbers 11:4–6 (NLT)
They were not eating fish for free, they were slaves. They were thinking that the past was better but no matter what we think satisfies us and makes us happy eventually gets old.
Q. What are some things you thought would make you happy but instead only brought you craving for something more (or made you desire to go back to your past as the Jews wanting to go back to Egypt)?
John 6:35 (ESV)
2. Jesus is the One When I REALIZE that EARTHLY POWER CORRUPTS.
John 6:28 (ESV)
Their quest for bread is really about power to get free from Rome. They were not looking for God, but looking for what He could do.
John 6:40 (ESV)
The power we need is not in this life, it is in the Holy Spirit and the name of Jesus. No matter how much power we get on this planet, we will get old and die and the only power that can set us free is the Resurrection power of Jesus Christ! It is the only power that can set us free. We need the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Q. What are you seeking for in Jesus (is it power to obtain something or is it power to be set free from worldly desires)?
3. Jesus is the One When I REALIZE it’s ONLY GOD’S GRACE that SAVES.
John 6:41–44 (ESV)
Jesus is the True bread and water. No one can come to Him unless God draws them. Even if we don’t know God, He is still working in our life. He had to draw us to Him for us to come to Him. God does not start something He cannot finish. Our future is not in our hands, but in His hands. This is why we cannot boast about being a Christian. We boast about what He did not what we do. We rejoice in God’s forgiveness and mercy. It is our job, as Christians, to pray that God draws people to Himself.
Q. What can you look back on and see how God worked in your life to draw you to Him (what people may stand out to you now as you reflect on your journey – even before you knew you were on a journey)?
1 Corinthians 15:9–10 (ESV)
God’s grace makes us who we are. Gods’ grace knows who we are going to meet. If we receive the grace there will be a change, we will not just be saved by grace but changed by grace. The testimony of a Christians is I came to Christ but it was Christ who saved me. We are chosen.
Q. How does understanding that God draws people to Him liberate you from being burdened when someone you are witnessing to or praying for does not respond in a positive way to the Gospel or accept your invite to church?
4: Jesus is the One When His WORD comes ALIVE to ME.
When we read the scriptures they come alive to us. This does not mean we understand all of them, but when a Christian hears the Scriptures they should resonate with us. Non-believers pick and choose what they want to hear. Those who pick and choose are more followers of culture than followers of Jesus.
John 6:44-45 (ESV)
When God’s word comes alive it is a sign we are saved.
Q. What is something in the Bible you may have struggled with as far as picking and choosing?
John 6:63 (ESV)
Q. Can you share a moment when God’s word came alive to you?
John 6:66 (ESV)
people walking out and saying they don’t like this or that is nothing new. It has been happening for over two-thousand years.
5: Jesus is the One When I STOP FOLLOWING the CROWD and STAY with HIM.
Q. In what ways may you have inadvertently allowed culture to shape you?
John 6:67-68 (ESV)
The people that stay with Jesus know there is no other place to go. They believed and came to know. The more they heard and saw the more they believed that Jesus is the One. Whoever gets the One, gets it all. When we have Him, we have everything we need.
Sermon on a sentence:
Jesus is the ONE who SATISFIES your SOUL, EMPOWERS your LIFE, and whose WORD YOU FOLLOW no matter what others say or do.
Challenge: Continue to pray and compel for the One.
