Key Verse: Ephesians 2

We may think that our jobs, careers, or kids give us purpose, however, our real purpose is not found in these things.  In some respect, they do give us meaning, but they are not where we find our true purpose.

Q. What are some things you have thought would give you purpose only to find they were empty?

Point one:

Who you are or Who you Were: Without God, we can’t fix ourselves and have no purpose but our own selfish desires.

Ephesians 2:1-3

This explains the condition we are all born into.   We cannot pick the time we were born, country, ethnicity, or sex we were born with and we cannot control that we were born separated from a Holy and Perfect God that created us.

We cannot fix ourselves even though the world tells us we can fix ourselves.  The One who can fix us is the One who created us. Self-help books, religious instructions, or organization we join,  cannot fix us.  We did not create ourselves therefore we do not know better than God who created us.  We need proper instruction.  Chris showed a video on people using gym equipment without proper instruction.

Q.What are some things you tried to do without proper instruction or direction and failed?

Point two:

What God did: Through Christ, our purpose is to be brought back to God.

Ephesians 2:4-7 ESV

God fixed the problem for us.  We are never going to be good enough and that is why God had to send Jesus. Once we accept who we are, we then find true meaning and purpose.

Q. When have you tried to fix yourself or someone and realized that this could only be fixed by God, our Creator?

Point three:

Who you are: God gives you two gifts worth more than anything this world offers:

Our purpose is to receive Grace and Faith.

Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

God gives us grace and faith.  We cannot boast because we did not save our selves.   Only God can give us the faith we receive from accepting His grace toward us.  These are gifts that we can accept or turn away.  When we accept grace, he then gives us faith.  Jesus died for all of our sins and His grace is freely given to everyone.  It is up to us to receive it or reject it.

Q. What are some examples of grace (either grace you have received, or grace you have offered others)?

We all have different measures of faith, but God will grow our faith as we walk in faith.  Some may turn down grace but we will all go before God and either accept it or reject it.  Heaven is perfect communion with a perfect and loving God.  Hell is separation from a perfect and loving God.

Q. Why is it difficult to receive grace sometimes?

God’s purpose for us:

Old Life – who we were.  What God has pulled us out of.

Grace – what God did.  He sent his Son Jesus to die for our sins. His blood covers us and God sees Jesus, not our sin.

Faith – who we are in Christ.  We are citizens of heaven.  God fills us and gives us faith.

New Life – what we do. We step out and use what God has given us.

We need to keep God at the center to carry out purpose daily.

Point four:

What you do:  Our ultimate Purpose is to do God’s will because of what He did for us NOT because we need to earn His love.

Ephesians 2:10 ESV

He chooses us. He makes us citizens of heaven and gives us grace and fills us with faith to carry out His purposes in our lives daily.  We have a choice to fulfill the purpose he has for us.  When we ask him to open our eyes, he brings us the opportunity.  Chris had used the example of Mario, a gentleman who had cancer and called the church.  Eventually, he was led to Christ and baptized all because Chris had answered a simple phone call.

Q. What opportunities has God given you to fulfill his purpose in your life?

Your purpose is not found in what you do but in what God has done.

You were created and saved Not by Good works but For Good works!

We should want to do good works because of what Christ has done for us.

Theme: When you understand the gift God has given you only then can you live out your purpose daily.
