SERIES THEME VERSE
SEE TO IT THAT NOT ONE TAKES YOU CAPTIVE BY PHILOSOPHY AND EMPTY DECEIT, ACCORDING TO HUMAN TRADITION, ACCORDING TO THE ELEMENTAL SPIRITS OF THE WORLD, AND NOT ACCORDING TO CHRIST.
Key Verse Colossians 3:18-4:1 ESV
America needs transformation.  Jesus wants to change our lives.  Colossians tells us what Jesus has come to do: He washes away our sins, gives us purpose and secures our future.
BEING A CHRISTIAN IS ABOUT MORE THAN GETTING TO HEAVEN.
When we come to Christ, we get excited about heaven, but we can be so ‘heavenly minded that we are no earthly good.’  Some can become too obsessed with Hell.  Paul is telling us that our reality is in Heaven but we need get grounded.
BEING A CHRISTIANS IS ABOUT MORE THAN GETTING TO CHURCH.
These are Sunday morning terms: singing, teaching etc.  Lots of people leave their Christianity there at Sunday morning. They judge the service on how it makes them feel or how inspiring the preacher was or the music; maybe they get mad when  a certain preacher is not preaching.   We don’t come to church for entertainment, we come to hear the Word from the Living Christ which is meant to change us.
Q. What are the dangers in these two extremes: believing that Christianity is only about getting to heaven or believing that Christianity is only about going to church?
Whatever – this is the connector.
We need to live in our homes as people who fear Christ the Lord.  The three hardest relationships are those with our spouse, parents/children and employers/employees.  We spend most of our time with these people.  The ones you spend the most time with, are the ones that test your faith. These are the three areas where the rubber hits the road: Marriage, Kids and Work.
1. Husbands and Wives (verses 18-19)
2. Fathers and Children (verses 20-21)
3. Masters and Servants (verses 22-4:1)
Q. Out of these 3 relationships, what is the most difficult for you and how does this relationship test your faith?
The person in each pair that Paul addresses first are the subservient part of the pair.   This is not by accident.  Paul is inspired by the Holy Spirit and he is sending a message to the people who feel like they have no power.  These people have far more power than they realize.  Our country is obsessed with rights.  We are more obsessed with our rights rather than taking responsibility for our lives.  We are also obsessed with equality.
EQUALITY IS A MYTH AND THE SOONER I ACCEPT IT, THE SOONER I CAN MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THE LIFE GOD GAVE ME.
Though, we are equal in value and worth before the eyes of God, we will never get to a point where everybody has equal everything.  We will never balance the scales for everyone to have the same exact job, fairness, opportunities, pay etc.  We have no power over the family we were born into, the country we were born in, our chromosomes, skin color, facial features, obesity, talents etc.   Some have it better than us and some have it worse but we should not let what we think we should be stop us from becoming what God wants us to be.  Whatever we do, or wherever we are,  we are to do it for the Lord.  We were bought with His blood and belong to our loving Father who knows us and will complete the work He started in us (Philippians 1:6).
Q. How have you  aloud what you think you should have due to rights and equality hinder the plan and purpose God has for you?
TO THOSE UNDER AUTHORITY:
1. IT’S NOT ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE, BUT HOW YOU HANDLE WHERE YOU ARE.
Do what you have been given to do well.  Do it for God’s glory and he will take care of the rest.  No one can take from us how we choose to respond.
The word submit does not refer to inferiority.  It refers to how Jesus submitted Himself to the Father, His parents and the Cross.  It starts with wives because wives have the power to change the home.  Every single time the NT addresses marriage, it begins with wives because wives have the power to change their family.
Even some  husbands that are not Christians may be won because of the conduct of their wives when you Trust God and do what He asks you to do in the marriage relationship.
Jesus understands parents that don’t understand.  Children need to trust God in this situation.  Jesus had parents that did not understand Him.
Work hard even when no one is looking.  Work hard and it will work out for you.  If it does not work out, get another job.
Q. How have you handled your difficult situations to the glory of God (referring to each of the verses above)?
TO THOSE IN AUTHORITY:
2. YOUR AUTHORITY AND POWER ARE TO BE LEVERAGED FOR THE BENEFIT OF THOSE UNDER YOUR AUTHORITY AND POWER.
Authority is a serious business for God.
People are hard to love.  In the real world you fall in love, get married and then wake up.  Love is not a mystical force that you are helpless to.
LOVE IS NOT GOD.
Love is a command.  Love is something we choose to do.  We choose to do it because God chose to do it for us (1 John 4:19).
WHEN WE MYSTIFY LOVE WE LOSE OUR MORALS.
An example of this is someone wanting to save their animal over a stranger.
Q. What mystical ideas of love have you had and how did those ideas cause you to lose your morals?
WHAT IF WE DID THIS?
JESUS DID IT AND HE CAN HELP.
