Growth Track:  In this 3 part class; Discover, Deepen, & Dedicate; you will get answers to the most frequently asked questions about Waters Church and have an opportunity to ask your own. This is the perfect place to get to know the “Why” behind the “What” of who we are as a church.

Key Verse John 14 ESV

John 14:1 (ESV)

The night before Jesus was going to be betrayed, arrested and mocked,  He washes his disciples feet and sends Judas off.  He told them He was going to leave them and they did not understand.  Even Peter, who said that wild horses could not tear him away, denied Him.  Jesus was telling them in this passage not to let their hearts be troubled in spite of what they see.   Jesus tells them not to just believe in God, but also in Him.

He ties the condition of our hearts to our belief system.  The heart is a phenomenal instrument.  It is the most important part of our physical body but it is also ground zero of the battle in our lives.  Heart disease, is the number one killer across the world.  Heart disease is a serious problem.  DIS-EASE.

Proverbs 17:22 (ESV)

Up to 80 percent of anger, bitterness and, un-forgiveness is a major cause of internal disease.

Q. What experience have you had of emotional or physical illness due to holding bitterness toward another person?

The PURPOSE of the heart (according to scripture):

Seat of Intellect

Proverbs 14:33 (ESV)

The PURPOSE of the heart (according to scripture):

Source of our Thoughts:

The PURPOSE of the heart (according to scripture):

Center of our Emotions:

Proverbs 12:25 (ESV)

The PURPOSE of the heart (according to scripture):

Determiner of our Will:

Psalm 84:5 (ESV) ; Proverbs 4:23 (ESV)

Our heart is the most important part of who we are.  However, we tend to work on the showpiece, outward appearances.

Q.  Have you ever focused too much on outward appearances and how can this get us off track (not focusing on things above,  but being so enamored with what we look like to others, instead of caring about others)?

First Problem of the heart: External ASSAULT.

We need to guard things against getting into our hearts.  We are to watch out what gets into our hearts. If we want to live a life of peace, we need to stop things (that don’t give us peace) from trying to get into our hearts.

Q. What are some examples of things you get so consumed with that rob you of peace?

2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)

We need to take our thoughts captive instead of allowing our thoughts to take us captive.  We need to take our thoughts to Jesus and let him give us peace.    We are to watch out what we put in front of our eyes.  The eyes are the windows of our hearts.

Q.  Could the reason for your stress be things you are allowing your eyes to see and why (tv, social media, internet, etc., other people)?

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT):

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

1 Kings 11:4 (NLT)

Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs and even tells his son to watch out for what gets in his heart, yet he didn’t even follow what he said.  He had 700 wives.  External forces are aimed at our hearts every day.

The Second problem of the heart: Internal ROT.

The problem is not the media and technology and it is not other people.  It is a universal problem for everyone.

Genesis 6:5 (ESV)

This is the Bibles record of the heart of man.

Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)

The heart is deceitful and sick.  We should not trust our feelings.  Just because you feel something does not mean it is true.  We should not trust our heart but be tethered to the truth – Jesus.  We are to root ourselves in Jesus, He is the Way, the Truth and, the Life.

Q.  When have you trusted your feelings or your instincts over what you know to really be true and why?  What was the outcome?

Mark 7:21–23 (ESV)

THE HEART OF OUR PROBLEM IS THE PROBLEM OF OUR HEART.

Psalm 51:5  (ESV) ; Psalm 51:10 (ESV)

The heart is dirty and messed up.

Romans 7:14–15 (ESV); Romans 7:18 (ESV)

Q. How do you relate to those to passages?

John 14:1 (ESV)

Believing in Him will change our hearts.

JESUS is the SOLUTION to a TROUBLED heart!

John 14:2–3 (ESV)

Jesus is coming back and when He comes back it will not matter who is in office, who is our boss.  One day Jesus is coming back and he will reign forever!

Romans 10:9–10 (ESV) if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

1 Corinthians 2:1 (ESV) When I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Ezekiel 11:19–20 (ESV) I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

We were all born with a heart of stone.  The only way the stone changes is from external forces.  Jesus takes the heart of stone and replaces it with a heart of flesh.

“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” ― St. Augustine

Pray for the lost and for each other.  Pray for the Above and Beyond Campaign – new roof, parking lot and building for Woonsocket.  Pray for the Guatemala missions and all of our missions.  Pray for our leaders, country, and nation.
