‘Coming Home’ | Part Two – ’A Demon Possessed Man’
Key Verse: Mark 5
All scripture is part of God’s great plan of redemption. They are not just stories for us to have, but they are all part of God’s plan.
Many people today do not believe in demonic spirits. If Jesus says there are such things, then there are. Many people throughout the world are demon possessed.
Q. What, if any, experience have you had with someone who was demon possessed?
Mark 5:1-2
This man had been living in a cemetery for sometime. We do not know much about him because it was not as important in this moment as was the man’s condition. This is a picture of all of us, the whole world is a graveyard. Everything has within it the seed of decay. Everything is passing away. God prepared a garden for His creation, but because of sin, death was introduced.
Romans 3:23
The cemetery was probably well kept. The grass was probably watered, there were probably flowers but it was a place of decay.
Mark 5:3-7
This man was chained, though no one could subdue him, screamed day and night ,he was tormented, naked, and had a tremendous stench. He was a hopeless case. He was left to die because no one could help him.
We tend to judge those we think are crazy but it may be just their cry for help.
Q. In what ways can you compare this man’s condition to the world around us?
Jesus came to this man after coming through a fierce storm. He was sleeping when His disciples woke Him up. He rebuked the winds and calmed the sea and He rebuked them for their lack of faith. We were created to reveal God’s glory. God created us for His glory. He created us in His image. Man was not created to live in a graveyard, but a garden.
Revelation 22:1-5
He is preparing a garden for His people.
When we don’t bring glory to His Name, their is a cry in our hearts. As believers, we are free from the bondage of sin. We are meant to bring Him glory. Nothing could free this demon possessed man. Inside every person is a vacuum and only God can possess that vacuum. Instead of changing, we use different things to cover up. We are helpless, these things we use cannot deliver us.
Q. What are some ways you try (have tried) to fill that vacuum (addiction, religion, sports, good works, etc.)?
Man’s hopelessness makes a way for God. Jesus goes through the storm for the one man. Jesus never created a graveyard, He raised the dead. He passed through a fierce storm for this man that everyone despised and rejected. Jesus went through another storm to bring us back to God. Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).
Mark 5:8-13
He asked the demon it’s name and many demons came out of the man. The demons knew exactly who Jesus was. There are religions of the world today who don’t know who Jesus is.
John 8:36
Mark 5:14
The herdsman had never seen anything like this. They went and told everyone. People came to see a man sitting peaceful. This is what Jesus does. He is the Prince of Peace. We have the peace of God through Jesus.
Mark 5:15
He was changed.
This man was finished with his old life.
2 Corinthians 5:17
He was clothed.
God takes our grave clothes off and clothes us with His righteousness. He does not look at our failures but at the righteousness of Christ.
Q. How does this encourage you when you are convicted of sin?
He was in his right mind.
Our minds are renewed by the Word. This man’s mind was renewed.
Romans 12:2
Mark 5:18
This man was so grateful he wanted to get into he boat with Jesus. Jesus told him to go home and tell people the good things the Lord had done for Him.
The man had to come home first. God is calling people home today. When he heals us, we have the ability to tell others.
Q. Who and how are you telling others about the goodness of God?
Challenge: Invite someone to Easter services.
