This series is based on the theme that though we are disconnected from each other we don’t have to be disconnect from God. Take this time to get closer to God. The virus has changed our world and how we live. It has canceled us being able to come together at church and other things we love. It has temporarily suspended our freedoms, BUT it cannot cancel the Resurrection! It is forever our hope in the past, present and in the future.
There is more activity since the virus had begun, more people are out walking. Walking is healthy. It gives us more energy, lowers risk of heart disease, and jumpstarts our creative juices.
Q. What are you doing to exercise during this time and how has physical exercise helped you mentally and physically?
God is a fan of walks, he walks with us.
Genesis 3:8 (ESV) God walked through the Garden.
Genesis 13:17 (ESV) He told Abraham to walk the length and breadth of the land.
Exodus 14:22 (NLT) They walked through the Red Sea.
Jesus wants us to walk with Him. Through the trouble, pain and confusion He is with us to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20).
FOUR REASONS WHY THE RESURRECTION CANNOT BE CANCELED:
- Jesus comes to the UNKNOWNS.
Luke 24:13 (ESV)
Jesus got right to work and reached out to these two people. They were discussing what happed to Jesus with Jesus Himself. We don’t know who these people are in this passage. This was an important day in history and Jesus goes to the unknowns. Jesus loves the nobody’s, He looks for those who others ignore.
1 Corinthians 1:26 (NLT)
He is not impressed by human accomplished or achievement.
Q. In what ways have you tried to achieve salvation and when did you realize Jesus was not interested in your accomplishments?
2. Jesus comes to US AS WE ARE.
He came to see these people as they were. They were arguing with each other. Jesus met them where they were. He did not wait for them to be faithful, He came to them in the midst of their argument.
Luke 24:16-19 (ESV)
They did not recognize it was Jesus. They were ignorant to the fact they were walking with Him. Jesus comes to us a we are.
Q. What are some experiences where Jesus came to you as you were (lonely, depressed, angry, arguing, etc.) and were you (at first) ignorant to the fact that He was there with you?
FAITH (like a walk) is a JOURNEY, not just a DESTINATION.
Some people may say they don’t have faith or that they are skeptics. It does not matter who we are, it matters who He is. He will do a work in our lives no one else can do.
None of us START at the same PLACE or MOVE at the same PACE.
For some they first heard when their lives were falling to pieces while others grew up in the Church. We all have different running starts than someone else. We don’t all start at the same place. Jesus does not expect us to keep up with everyone else. He comes to us where we are.
Q. How have you tried to compare your walk with someone else’s walk and why?
Luke 24:25–26 (ESV)
Starting in verse 19 – Cleopas did not understand what was happening, he was confused bout the circumstances. We too can get confused about our circumstances and we may ask ‘why’ does God allow certain things. Sometimes our questions are a wall and they keep us from seeking who He is. We have dreams about the way our lives should be but things don’t work out the way we plan. Some of us may have had bad things happen to us, even in the Church, and we are skeptical. Cleopas and his friend are walking away from Jerusalem. He needs more proof Jesus is alive.
Q. What kinds of questions have you had that kept you from seeing who Jesus is or has made you skeptical (maybe this virus, wars, world famine, disasters your life not going the way you planned, etc.)?
In our culture we can look at the evidence that Jesus is who he says He is.
History is divided on Him (BC/AD). His disciples went to their death for Him. We have had earthquakes even in the midst of this current crisis.
Matthew 24:4-8 (ESV)
We are living what he talked about 2000 years ago. Are we ready if He comes back today?
3. Jesus comes ALIVE TO US through the PAGES of SCRIPTURE.
Luke 24:27 (ESV)
Jesus goes all the way back to the Old Testament to convince them of who He is. Jesus is the True Cain, Jospeh, Moses, David and Daniel. Jesus leads them through these stories and shows them that He is the final sin offering, the True Life and True Bread. Jesus is the suffering servant.
Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)
Isaiah wrote these words 800 years before Jesus ever showed up.
Luke 24:32 (ESV)
When we invite Jesus in, He comes in to rule and reign and be the Host of our lives. The moment they welcomed Him, they saw who He was. When we see Jesus, our hearts will burn and our eyes will be opened, for He changes lives!
Q. How much convincing did you need to realize Jesus is who He says he is (maybe it took you years, minutes days to believe, etc.) and how did you react when you first believed?
4. Jesus brings US TO THE LIGHT so that NO DARKNESS can OVERWHELM us.
Luke 24:33 (ESV)
These two people walked 7 miles with Jesus, and they tell him it’s late and getting dark. Out of fear of the darkness coming they get in the house and shelter down, but the moment they see who Jesus is they run in the night all the way back to Jerusalem. Before they were scared of the dark and now they are bold and fearless in the midst of it. When we walk with Him, no darkness can overwhelm us. That is what the Empty Grave is all about!
Q. Before you realized who Jesus really was, what overwhelmed you?
Q. Now that you know who He is, how have you become bold and fearless in the midst of your fears?
Psalm 139:11–12 (ESV)
IF HE IS THE LORD OF OUR HEART, WE HAVE NO REASON TO FEAR THE DARK.
