Genesis 3:1 (NIV)
The best thing we can do for the Devil in our life is to deny He exists. We wonder why our life is jacked up because we don’t believe in the devil. As a culture, we have turned away from God’s word and when that happens, we feel the effects as the devil comes to attack our life.
Ice-breaker question:
Q. What were your thoughts about the devil before you became a Christian?
FACT: Scripture is PURPOSELY NOT SILENT on Satan.
We are in a battle that is not to be taken lightly. He lives to deceive to the extent that we don’t believe he exists.
Revelation 12:9
Satan is the deceiver of the whole world. He is real and has lied his way to world and international success. He accuses all the time.
John 8:44 (ESV)
THREE THINGS I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEVIL:
- He is a real spiritual OPPONENT.
- He ACCUSES me day and night.
- He LIES all the time.
Q. What are some accusations the Devil had made toward you?
Our God is greater than the devil and God does not want us to listen to the devil’s accusations. We are God’s children.
SERIES THEME: Your Father in heaven wants you to know the TRUTH about the Devil’s LIES.
Q. What are some lies you are listening to right now that you need God to set you free from?
1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
Devil’s #1 Lie: Did God really say…?
The devil wants us to think God’s word cannot be trusted.
3 Ways the Devil gets us to DISTRUST God’s Word:
- MINIMIZATION: God’s Word is not THAT IMPORTANT.
Genesis 3:1(NIV)
God did not ‘say’, he ‘commanded’ (Genesis 2:16 NIV)
Q. What about God’s word have you really thought was not that important and how did you come to realize the lie (example: ‘I can go a couple of weeks without going to church’ etc..)?
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
We are able to see where we are going and where we should go because of the Bible. When we don’t have light, even in a familiar place, we can get anxious.
Q. What is an example of where you were ‘in the dark’ about something and got scared or anxious and how did God’s word shed light on it for you (example: perhaps you were anxious about money, children, food OR you were literally in darkness in an unfamiliar place and became afraid)?
Psalm 32:7 (ESV); Psalm 121:7–8 (ESV); 2 Timothy 4:18 (ESV)
The Devil seeks to MINIMIZE God’s TRUTH so that he can MAXIMIZE his LIES.
Pastor Tim encouraged us to get the Word into ourselves by reading the Bible (get a One Year Bible), watch the Bible Project on Youtube, and listen to the DeepEnd Podcast (Tuesday nights at 7:00p).
Leader: This would be a good opportunity to challenge your group to read or listen through the Bible this year.
2. LIMITATION: God’s Word is KEEPING you from the GOOD LIFE.
Genesis 3:1(ESV); Genesis 3:2–5 (ESV)
The devil got Eve to talk about what God said was off limits. The devil gets us to start thinking about what we don’t have and blame God for it.
Q. What did you think you would miss out on (or perhaps still think you are missing out on) by following God’s word?
The Devil wants to FOCUS your attention on the thing you DON’T HAVE and get you to BLAME GOD for it.
Q. How have you blamed God for not having what you thought you deserved?
Discipleship is LEARNING to LOVE and TRUST the Word of God because God’s COMMANDS are not DEMANDS.
Psalm 112:1–3 (ESV)
God knows what is good for us and what is right for us.
3. INSTIGATION: God’s Word is AGAINST you.
Genesis 3:4–5 (ESV); Genesis 3:8–10 (ESV)
Q. Have you ever thought God was against you and why (has anyone ever turned you against God or have you ever thought He was out to get you)?
