Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting us into Your rest. As we gather today, we ask for Your Spirit to quiet our hearts, open our minds, and refresh our souls. Teach us what it truly means to rest—in our bodies, minds, and spirits—and to trust fully in the finished work of Christ. Help us release every burden, every anxious thought, and every place of unrest. May Your Word speak deeply to us, and may we leave here more surrendered to Your care. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Key Verse: Hebrews 4
Ice Breaker Question:
If you had an entire day with no responsibilities or distractions, how would you choose to spend your time resting and recharging?
Four Facts about Rest:
1. Rest is BIBLICAL.
Genesis 2:3
When something is on the first page of the Bible, it is essential.
Psalm 4:8 ESV
Psalm 127:2 ESV
2. Rest is BROKEN.
Over one-third of Americans sleep less than 7 hours per night on average, despite the recommended 7 hours or more that we should get. Half of American workers report feeling tired during the day due to insufficient sleep.
3. Rest is a BROAD concept: PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL.
Lack of sleep weakens your immune system, destabilizes your emotions, and impairs your brain as if you were drunk.
It is not always about physical rest; for some, it is a sense of restlessness.
Restlessness often stems from thoughts of regret about the past, insecurity in the present, or dread about the future.
2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) Take every thought captive…
Q. Which area of rest—physical, mental, or emotional—do you find hardest to maintain, and how might taking your thoughts captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) help you find peace in that area?
4. Rest is the BLESSING of SALVATION in Christ.
Hebrews 4:1 ESV
The promise is not of rest, but of entering His rest.
Rest is found in Christ. Outside of Christ, life is restless. He is enough.
Practical Application:
Set aside some time this week to unplug from busyness and spend time with God. Use that time to journal or pray through the truths found in Genesis 2:3, Psalm 4:8, Psalm 127:2, and Hebrews 4:1. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live from a place of rest, not striving, and to heal the broken areas that resist stillness.
1. We find TRUE REST through FAITH in Christ.
Hebrews 4:3-4 ESV
The rest we read about in this passage is a rest rooted in faith in Christ. By believing in Jesus, we enter His rest.
God rested on the seventh day of Creation after completing His work, having made peace with Himself and made mankind possible.
Exodus 20:8-11 ESV
The Sabbath was a weekly sermon meant to remind Israel that God intended humans to live in peace with Him, as at Creation.
Thus, we have the seven-day cycle, where we work six days and rest one day.
Take a day off. Do something other than work. You can’t be strong in your work if you don’t take a day to rest.
Romans 10:4 ESV
Colossians 2:16–17 ESV
Technically, we don’t rest on the seventh day; we rest/worship on the first day, Sunday.
In the Old Covenant, you WORK TO REST.
In the New Covenant, you WORK FROM REST.
You rest on the first day of the week, then work the rest of the week. You don’t have to work to be accepted; you are accepted, and now you get to work for God.
Q. What does it mean to you personally to “work from rest” in Christ rather than “work to rest,” and how does trusting Jesus change the way you view your need for rest?
Practical Application:
This week, intentionally set aside one full day—or even part of a day—to rest from your everyday work. Use that time to worship, pray, reflect on Hebrews 4:3-4, and enjoy God’s presence. Remind yourself that your value and peace come not from your performance but from your faith in Christ, who is your proper Sabbath rest.
2. We find TRUE REST having a FUTURE in Christ.
Hebrews 4:5 ESV
Psalm 95:10 ESV
In this passage, David refers to the generation of the wilderness.
The Israelites did not believe God; therefore, they could not enter His rest.
Hebrews 4:6-10 ESV
Their disobedience kept them from entering God’s rest.
Hebrews 4:3 ESV
If we believe, we can dwell with God and have perfect rest forever.
Christ has undone what Adam has done.
You REST not simply in the deliverance from your sins, you REST in the security of heaven.
Ephesians 2:6 NLT
If you are in Christ, your life is SEATED (rested) in the heavenly realm with Christ. When you get hold of this, it wipes out the restlessness of this world.
Q. How does knowing your future is secure in Christ—seated with Him in the heavenly realms—help calm your present restlessness or fear?
Practical Application:
Write down one area of your life where you feel anxious or uncertain about the future. Then, pray, asking God to remind you that your eternity is secure in Him. As you do, speak this truth over your life: “In Christ, my future is already at rest.” Return to this truth whenever restlessness creeps in.
3. We find TRUE REST in the FAITHFUL CARE of Christ.
Hebrews 4:11-12 ESV
God’s Word cuts into our souls.
God’s Word shows us where we fall short!
God’s Word exposes our hearts.
God’s Word reveals the things we hide or don’t even realize.
God’s Word is like the JUMBOTRON at a COLDPLAY CONCERT.
It exposes our lives.
Hebrews 4:13-16 ESV
We have a high priest in Jesus who stands between us and God.
He knows what it’s like for us. He never sinned, but He can sympathize with us, having become a human being.
Jesus was tempted, He passed, and now He prays for us.
Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
Q. How does it change your view of rest to know that Jesus sees every part of you-your struggles, sin, and pain—and still offers mercy, grace, and help?
Practical Application:
This week, invite the Holy Spirit to use God’s Word to expose any area of your life where you are striving, hiding, or weary. Then come boldly to the throne of grace and receive the rest and care Jesus is ready to give. Trust that He fully understands—and fully loves—you.
Key Takeaways:
Name and discuss three takeaways you recieved from this message.
Sermon in a sentence:
When I stop PERFORMING and start BELIEVING, I step into the true rest that HEALS my body, mind, and soul—in CHRIST alone.
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for being our Rest—our refuge in a restless world. Thank You for the cross, for Your faithful care, and for the eternal future we have in You. We ask that the truth of Your Word would continue to work in our hearts even after we leave this place. Help us to walk in step with You this week, trusting You more, striving less, and living from the peace that only You provide. In Your name, we pray, Amen.
