Key Verse: Hebrews 10:24–25

Ice Breaker Question:

What’s one place you always go with others, but would never choose to go alone?

**********************************************************

Opening Prayer:

Father, thank you for creating us for community, not isolation. As we open Your Word, stir our hearts to see the beauty of Your presence among Your people. Please help us grow in faith, lift one another up, and step into the spiritual health that comes only through connection. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Engaging in community can help undo many of the poor health choices you make elsewhere.

Fact: LONELINESS is TOXIC.

Chronic loneliness increases the risk of dementia, is strongly linked to depression, and increases the risk of heart disease.

Blood pressure is higher in individuals who feel lonely, and a study in the UK found that these individuals have higher levels of inflammation.

Genesis 2:18 ESV

We are not good when we are alone.

The theme of our central passage today is that Jesus has done everything we need to bring us back to God.  He did what Moses could not, what angels did not, and what David waited for.  He paved the way back to God.

Hebrews is a sermon to Jewish people who had come to Christ.  They Christians were expelled from their synagogues.

Their temptation was to go back to their religion.

We are to move beyond dead religious rituals and walk in the fullness of a relationship with God through Christ.

We can’t go back, we can only go forward.

Hebrews 10:19 ESV; 1 John 1:7 ESV; Hebrews 10:20 ESV; Mark 15:38 ESV

We have access now to the HOLY PLACE (reserved for priests) and the MOST HOLY PLACE – where God dwells.

Ephesians 2:19–22 (ESV)

(Leader: select one of these questions that would best fit your group’s discussion):

Q. When have you been tempted to “go back” to old habits or religious routines instead of moving forward into a deeper relationship with God, and how did that affect your sense of connection with Him and others?

OR

Q.  Why do you think God designed us for connection, and what are some of the ways loneliness can affect us spiritually, not just physically?

  1. When we GATHER, God’s presence SHOWS UP.

Hebrews 10:21–22 (ESV)

We have Jesus over us.  He takes authority over our fellowship.

Scripture speaks of authority as taking responsibility.  Ultimately, Jesus takes full responsibility.  He is here, in our midst.

As Christians, it is our God given right to enter God’s presence.

Q: How have you experienced God’s presence in a gathering of believers versus when you’re alone?

Practical Application:

Make it a priority to attend your life group and church gatherings—not just for what you receive, but because God often moves specially when His people come together.

2. When we GATHER, faith POWERS UP.

Hebrews 10:23 (ESV)

We hold to the confession by showing up in the gathering of the church.

The people you are around will have the most significant impact on what you think, do, and believe.

Hebrews 10:24 25 (ESV) – This passage is the go-to passage for teaching people to get together in the Church because it is the only place where we are commanded to gather together.

Every other command in the New Testament implies that we are already gathered together.

Acts 2:46 (ESV) – They were not alone; they were together day by day.

Ephesians 4:2–3 (ESV)

Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)

You become like the people you choose to surround yourself with.  Get around people who are on fire for the Lord.

Q: In what ways does being with other believers strengthen your faith?

Practical Application:

Identify one person in your group this week to pray for and check in on—sharpening one another like iron sharpens iron.

3. When we GATHER, my HEALTH LEVELS UP.

Studies have shown that older people with good friends were 24% less likely to die over an eight-year follow-up period compared to those without a solid circle.

People with close confidence are more satisfied with their lives and less likely to suffer from depression, and have lower anxiety levels.

Q: Why do you think your spiritual and emotional health improves when you consistently gather with others?  Can you share a specific example?

Practical Application:

Make space in your week to gather in person with believers—consider it a part of your “spiritual health plan.”

How to Gather for OPTIMUM HEALTH

1. SHOW up REGULARLY.

Hebrews 10:25 (ESV)

2. SPEAK up ENCOURAGINGLY.

Hebrews 10:25b (ESV)

3. STIR up SELFLESSLY.

Hebrews 10:24 (ESV)

Q: Which of these three—showing up regularly, speaking encouragingly, or stirring others up selflessly—do you find most challenging, and why?

Practical Application:

This week, ask God to show you which of these habits needs the most growth in your life. Choose one and take an intentional step to practice it—whether it’s committing to show up, speaking words that build others up, or finding a way to serve and encourage someone else.

Key Takeaways:

What are three key takeaways you received from this message?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank you for making us a part of your household. Remind us that we are never alone and that You meet us powerfully in community. Help us to prioritize gathering, to speak life, and to stir one another up in love. Strengthen our faith as we walk together in unity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
