Key Verse: Genesis 25
Icebreaker Question:
What’s one time in your life when being picked for something surprised you, whether it was a team, job, role, or responsibility?
Opening Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your grace that reaches into our brokenness. As we open Your Word, help us to see that You choose us not based on our performance but on Your purpose. Teach us through Jacob’s life how You work through our weakness and transform us for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
We often blame God for the wrongs in our lives.
We may cry out to God when we are going through a tough time, ‘Why now, why this, why me?’
As a believer, have you ever asked yourself a better question, such as why He chose you?
God has his reasons for choosing His people, but this isn’t done randomly. He has his reasons why.
1. Sovereign Selection – God’s choice is rooted in His DIVINE PURPOSE, not our HUMAN PERFORMANCE.
Genesis 25:23 (ESV)
Romans 9:11-13 (ESV)
As we read in this passage, Jacob and Esau had not yet been born, and God had already made His sovereign choice.
God’s choice is not based on performance but on grace.
Lessons from Jacob: Jacob was a DECEIVER, but still CHOSEN by God.
Genesis 27:18-19 (ESV)
Jesus does not judge us on our past or our performance.
Q. How does it impact your view of God’s love and calling to know He chooses based on His purpose and not your performance?
Practical Application: Reflect this week on areas where you’ve been trying to “earn” God’s favor. Surrender those areas in prayer, acknowledging that His grace is what qualifies you.
2. Surprising Strategy – God delights in using the UNLIKELY to reveal the UNIMAGINABLE.
Jacob was not the only person God used. He often used unlikely people for unimaginable things: Moses, David, Jeremiah, Rahab, Zacchaeus, Esther, and many more.
Genesis 27:36 (ESV)
Jacob tricked his brother, lied to his father, and God still chose to continue the covenant He made with Jacob’s grandfather, Abraham.
1 Corinthians 1:27 (ESV)
Lessons from Jacob: Jacob was a man full of FEAR, but still USED by God.
Genesis 32:6-7 (ESV)
Q. When have you felt too weak, unqualified, or fearful to be used by God?
Practical Application: Identify one way God might be calling you to trust Him with something you feel unequipped for. Take a small step of obedience in that area this week.
3. Shape through Sanctification – God calls us to SURRENDER, then TRANSFORMS us through a lifelong process of SANCTIFICATION.
Genesis 35:10 (ESV)
Jacob wrestled with God, refusing to let go. God showed him mercy, blessed him, and changed his name.
Israel means ‘one who wrestles with God’ or ‘one who strives with God. Today, the name Israel is more collectively associated with ‘God prevails.’
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
Lessons from Jacob: When Jacob finally SURRENDERED, God renamed and RESHAPED him for a GREATER PURPOSE.
Q. What does surrender look like in your life right now, and how do you think God is using it to shape you?
Practical Application: Set aside 10 minutes each day this week for silence and surrender, asking God to reveal what He is forming in you.
A Christian’s Purpose in Life Is To:
A. KNOW and LOVE God deeply — Matthew 22:37
B. GLORIFY GOD in everything we do — 1 Corinthians 10:31
C. Be TRANSFORMED through PRUNING into the image of Christ — Romans 8:29, John 15:2
D. LOVE and SERVE others faithfully — Matthew 22:39
Q. Which of these four purposes—knowing God, glorifying Him, being transformed, or loving others—do you feel God is prompting you to grow in most right now, and why?
Practical Application: Choose one of these areas and commit to a specific action step this week—whether it’s setting aside quiet time with God, honoring Him in your work, embracing a pruning season, or reaching out to serve someone in need.
4. Sacred Storyline – God selects us to SERVE in His unfolding STORY of SALVATION.
Genesis 35:11-12 (ESV)
God gave Jacob a role in His story of salvation. Through Abraham, then Issac, and now here through Jacob, God chose to use this family in His story of salvation.
John 15:16 (ESV)
God has a purpose for you. To know and believe in Christ, to be transformed into the image of Christ, and to love and serve like Christ wherever you are.
Lessons from Jacob: God used Jacob to become the FATHER of the TWELVE TRIBES of Israel.
Q. How does recognizing your life as part of God’s bigger story shift the way you view your purpose, especially during difficult or uncertain seasons?
Practical Application: Share your faith journey with someone this week. Let them see how God is writing His story through your life (Leader: ask if someone would like to share).
5. Saving Grace – God’s GRACE meets us in our REBELLION and rewrites OUR STORY for HIS GLORY.
Genesis 28:15 (ESV)
He comes to us when we are far from Him, then He gives us new lives, new eyes, a new story, a new life, and a new purpose!
Romans 8:30 (ESV)
God’s saving grace is not just a rescue; it’s a commitment.
Lessons from Jacob: Jacob ran from HIS MISTAKE, but he could not outrun GOD’S MERCY.
Q. How have you experienced God’s mercy in moments of your rebellion or failure?
Practical Application: Write down a short testimony of God’s grace in your life—how He met you when you were running—and consider sharing it in a group or with someone this week.
Sermon in a Sentence: God graciously chooses the BROKEN, reshapes them through SURRENDER, and uses them to reflect His eternal PURPOSE in His story of SALVATION.
Takeaways:
Can you share three takeaways you received from this message?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank you that you chose us not because of who we are, but because of who you are. Thank you for the example of Jacob—that even in our deceit, fear, rebellion, and failure, You never give up on us. Continue to shape us into the image of Christ and use us for Your sacred story of salvation. Help us to walk in surrender, love, and purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
