PAT BARRET CONCERT INFO:

Join Pat Barrett this Fall on the Beautiful Life Tour, taking his new album “Shelter” for a dozen dates around North America alongside guest Patrick Mayberry. The Atlanta-based artist expresses overflowing gratitude for the opportunity to invite people into this new worshipful journey. The Beautiful Life Tour finds inspiration in Ecclesiastes, a book exploring the wide spectrum of life in its mundanity, pain, redemption, and holy beauty. It will be a space for honesty, communion, and encouragement as people hold the tension of life before God in worship. With a full band, Pat Barrett will blend some classics (“Build My Life,” “Good Good Father,” “The Way”) with brand-new songs (“Shelter,” “Praise Him,” “Seen Known Loved”). Each night promises to be influenced by the people who are there as he shares, “I want to go in with the plan and also have faith to see where it goes.” The Beautiful Life Tour will be a space for celebration and communion; we can’t wait to see you!

Key Verse: Psalm 34

Ice breaker

Q. What is something you want to do before the summer is over?

There is something about tasting and seeing food that although it may smell good and look good, when you take a bite, it actually does not taste that good.

We have all tasted bad food and some of us have tasted bad experiences like bad interactions with family, or have tasted hurt, depression, pain, or hardships.  Not all tastes are good and not everything tastes the same.

But, when you taste something good, you want to share it.

Q. Can you share an instance in your life where you experienced a situation that looked promising but ended up being a letdown? How did you navigate through that disappointment?

Context on David

Can be read in 1 Samuel 16 but not necessary as the context is below:

David, a young shepherd boy and a musician, was anointed to be the next king of Israel.  After killing a giant with a sling and a stone, Saul, the present king, started paying attention to David and became jealous.  He was so jealous that he wanted to kill David who was also his son-in-law.

David hid in a cave and there he wrote this:

Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

David tasted and saw that God was good!  In the cave, David was making an invitation to us to experience something he personally experienced.

The invitation to taste and see can only come from a personal encounter in your life.  There are some things you can only experience yourself, others cannot experience it for you.

Q. What experience have you tried to relate to others that you had difficulty convincing them of how good or bad it was because they had not experience it themselves?

How can I taste & see GOD?
1.  I can taste God through TRUSTING Him.

David was running for his life and still he blessed the Lord at all times.

Q. David trusted God even while he was running for his life. How do you think trust in God helped David during such a challenging time?

Proverbs 3: 5-6 ESV

This verse urges us to place our life and our complete rust in God rather than other people.

Others can pray for us, but we cannot depend on them to do the miracle for us.  We need to trust God with everything. By trusting Him, we are acknowledging His sovereignty and are assured He will lead us on the right path and give us wisdom.  We cannot look for answers on our own, we need to trust God and not trust our instincts.

You can only trust someone when you spend time with them.  You can’t trust Him if you don’t spend time with him.

David spend time with God and trusted him.

Q. Reflect on Proverbs 3:5-6. What are some practical ways you can trust God more in your daily life, especially during difficult circumstances?

How can I taste & see GOD?

2. I can taste God through PRAYING.

Praying is simply communicating.  No fancy words are needed to communicate with God. He is more concerned with our hearts than our words.

1 Peter 5:6 ESV

Luke 18:1-8

Pray with persistence.

Luke 18:9-14

Be humble in your prayers.

1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray continually.

Praying once a week is not enough.  You need to make time for God to get closer to God.

Q. Discuss the parables in Luke 18:1-8 and Luke 18:9-14. How do these stories illustrate the importance of persistence and humility in prayer?

How can I taste & see GOD?

3. I can taste God through WORSHIPPING.

Worship is not limited to a specific time or place.  Worship is not  just a music style, it is a lifestyle. It is saying to the Lord that you are going to put your desires aside.

We worship with our thoughts and in doing things we don’t want to do.

Romans 12:1-2 ESV

Q. Romans 12:1-2 talks about offering our bodies as living sacrifices and renewing our minds. How can you incorporate worship into your daily routine beyond traditional practices?

We saw Lemmy eat a delicious cake.  We know it was delicious because he told us.  We cannot truly know what it was like to eat the cake because we did not eat it to see that it tasted good.

It was so good, he shared it with others.

Same with God, when we experience Him for ourselves, we want to share Him with others.

Q. Can you share a recent personal story where you felt compelled to share your experience of God with others?  How did that impact your relationship with God and those you shared it with?

Sermon in a Sentence:

In order to FULLY TASTE and SEE God’s goodness, I need to go DEEPER in Him while ALSO finding REFUGE in Him.

Challenge: If you are not someone who prays in public, practice praying short prayers with others.

Challenge: Spend more time with God this week than you did last week.
