Key Verse: Joshua 1
Ice breaker
Q. What commercial jingle or song, that if you hear it, you cannot get out of your head?
How To – Part 6
Be a Leader
Joshua 1
Our culture is thoroughly contaminated with false, demonic ideas of who we are. We are living in a world of distorted demonic views of how to be human. The world is going in an unhealthy direction.
We are made in Gods image, as Christians, we are the building blocks of the future of the world.
The Choice: LEAD in life or FOLLOW this world.
If you are going to be a Christian, you are going to have to be a leader. You can be a leader even when you are not in charge.
Life is hard and Christianity is even harder. It is easy to go with the flow and follow what friends and co-workers do.
Leadership is influencing others, doing things that inspire others to do the same things.
‘…success and achievement come from overcoming adversity… ‘To be successful at anything, the truth is you don’t have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren’t.’ -Tom Brady
Q. Our culture is being contaminated with false ideas of identity. How do you see this influence manifesting in your own life or community? How can embracing the concept of being made in God’s image challenge these distorted views?
- Leadership STARTS by KNOWING you’re SERVING God.
‘Joshua’ is the first book of the Bible beyond the book of ‘Moses.’
Joshua 1:1-2 (ESV)
The Hebrew word for ‘after’ is ‘and’. What God is telling Joshua in this passage is that Moses is gone and now you must move on.
Life is not a ‘period’ until you die. Learn how to put some ‘ands’ where the devil wants to put some ‘buts’, periods, or stop signs. Move forward until God stops you.
It is hard to follow great people. It is hard to live in someone else’s shadow. You need to step out. The reality is that everyone is not special, just servants of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 3:5 (ESV)
Paul was a servant. In God’s economy, there are no great people, just servants of a great God. You can become a leader because God blesses and empowers servants. There is no special talent needed to serve.
Matthew 20:26-28 (ESV)
Pains and hurts might keep you back but, move forward in life forget the past, and embrace the future.
Q. Can you discuss ways in which you can lead through service in your personal or professional life?
2. Leadership GROWS out of TIME ALONE with God.
Joshua 1:2b-3 (ESV)
Moses and God had a close relationship.
Exodus 33:7-9(ESV)
If you want to be a leader, not a follower, you need to get away from people and stop focusing on what everyone else is doing.
Exodus 33:11 (ESV)
Great people (significant in Christ), don’t get there overnight.
There is a history of prayer and private time Joshua had with God that no one ever saw.
Christians need to have a devotional quiet time with the Lord. Set aside your attention-getting devices and ask the Holy Spirit to help you see and hear. Read the word and God will open it up in your heart.
Daniel 11:31–32 (ESV)
The people who know their God will stand in the last days. Know God by spending time alone with Him.
Q. Can you share your experiences or challenges with maintaining this kind of devotional practice? How has time alone with God, or the lack thereof, affected your ability to lead?
3. Leadership FLOWS from INWARD STRENGTH from God’s Word.
Joshua 1:6 (ESV
There are two words that God wants from Joshua: To be Strong and Courageous. Both are necessary.
Strong in Hebrew means to harden. Harden your resolve. Courageous means to be alert, to be bold, to stand apart.
Harden your resolve and be alert, bold, and ready to step out. Withstand the pressure and not be deterred by the pain.
How do I develop INWARD STRENGTH?
If you want a strong marriage, to stay single and pure, or to raise godly children, it is on the backside of spending time in God’s word.
A. KEEP God’s Word.
Joshua 1:7a (ESV)
Obey is doing. Doing the word is how you build strength.
B. GUARD God’s Word.
Joshua 1:7b (ESV)
Don’t let the devil distort God’s word in your life. The devil’s angle of lying is manipulating the truth. He twists God’s word.
C. SPEAK God’s Word.
Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
Say it. Speak it out. Your secret weapon is speaking God’s word out in your mouth. Say it over your life. Say things that are true because God’s word is true.
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV); Romans 10:17 (ESV)
Here are a few scriptures to speak over your life:
Philippians 4:13; 1 John 4:4; Romans 8:28; Romans 8:38
Q. Can you share some of your favorite verses that you use as a weapon against the enemy?
D. MEMORIZE God’s Word.
Joshua 1:8b (ESV)
Hide God’s word in your heart or you are a sitting duck for the enemy.
Q. Which of these practices do you find most challenging, and why? Discuss how you could integrate these actions more effectively into your life to enhance your leadership capabilities.
Sermon in a sentence:
Leadership is DEVELOPED in my life when I see myself as a SERVANT of Christ and spend time getting STRONG in God’s Word.
Challenge: Choose one scripture either from the list provided in the text (such as Philippians 4:13, 1 John 4:4, Romans 8:28, or Romans 8:38), or a different one, and commit to memorizing it. Throughout the week, find at least three different occasions to speak this verse out loud, either in personal reflection, during a conversation where it feels appropriate, or as an encouragement to someone else.
