Key Verse: Genesis 47

Money management has been lost in our culture.  This is partly because of our own mismanagement of our finances.  Forty percent of Jesus teachings was about money.  There are 2350 verses on money.  God is trying to say something to us because he knows money will be a cheap rival in our heart for him.  We cannot trust money. This country has been manipulated with money.  

The government handed out money during the pandemic. They manipulated us by offering free things and free money in exchange for our loyalty in observance to their rules.  Now we have sky high inflation. 

Q.  What decline in money mis-management have you experienced or witnessed over the years? (Credit, not balancing books, not knowing what you have coming in as opposed going out etc…).

Genesis 47:13 – 15 (ESV)

In two and a half years the people of Egypt go from land owning private citizens to slaves of Pharaoh.  That is an ironic timeframe.  They went from land-owning individuals to slaves of Pharaoh who is now set up to be the god of the country. 

FAMINES happen. 

Crises happen. Our Finances might be good now but might not be in two years.

Genesis 12:10 (ESV) 

This was the first Famine in the land.  Abraham did not handle the famine well, he was ready to abandon his marriage over the famine.  

Q. What fears do you have regarding your current financial situation?

Genesis 26:1–3 (ESV) 

This is the second famine in the land. God did not allow Isaac to make the same mistake is father Abraham did.  Isaac trusts God.

When FAMINE happens: Our TRUST is TESTED.

We don’t get tested when we can pay all of our bills.  We are tested when we are in dire straits. When everything looks like it is collapsing around us, this is a test.  Who are we going to look to in times of famine?  The people of Egypt turned to Pharaoh, not to God.  They were given a heads up and had seven years to store up but they could not even manage that and ended up worse off.  Sometimes nothing can stop the financial hardship or the famine from happening.  When it does happen, our trust is being tested.

Genesis 47 is about money.

1. MONEY FAILS.

It always ends up failing.  We cannot stop it from failing.

Genesis 47:15 (KJV) 

When money failed…

There is no such thing as having permanent funds.  There is no stopping it and we need to approach money from a Biblical mindset.  At the end of the age, right before Jesus returns, there will be a one world leader, a one world economy, and a mark we will be required to take to buy and sell.

Revelation 13:16-17 (ESV)

The end-times world leader is going to control the world with money.  We need to get our hearts right about money.

Luke 16:13 (ESV)

‘Serve’ is a worship word.  When we worship money it fails.  God never fails.

Proverbs 23:5 (NIV) 

Q. How are you currently or how can you start trusting God with your money?

2. When MONEY FAILS, I’ll be TEMPTED to find ASSURANCE ANYWHERE.

When money fails watch out.  When it is low the test happens. We will be tempted to do things that are against Gods word for our life all in pursuit of money.  And to find assurance anywhere.

Genesis 47:16-17 (ESV) 

They gave up all their cows, horses, herds, and donkeys.  They worshipped the cow so they could not eat that.  They made something in their life they could have used to not starve, and starved.  Horses were their industry.  Things we set up as gods make terrible gods. 

Genesis 47:18 – 19 (ESV) 

In the first year Joseph suggest they sell and then they come back again and it is them that suggests they should sell. They were conditioned.  This is where we are today.  They had two things left, their land and their bodies, and instead of offering up only one, they offered up both.  They did this because the enemy specializes in fear.  He loves to give us the worse case scenario up front.

Q. How are you tempted to find assurance in something that is against God’s word for your life (what may be something you are willing to give up that you should not because you are not trusting God)? 

The enemy uses FEAR to CONVINCE us that God won’t PROVIDE for us.

When money is TIGHT – I’m TAKING a TEST.

The Lord is testing our spirit, our mind, and our heart.  Now is the time to let God do the speaking in our life.  Financial crises come and go. We need to stop allowing the devil to speak and start trusting God.  

Matthew 6:11 (ESV); Matthew 6:34 (ESV); Matthew 6:30 (ESV); Psalm 37:25-26

The devil loves to talk about tomorrow but the Lord loves to talk about today.  God has us.  We need to let God speak over our life and not listen to the lies of the enemy. 

3. MONEY FAILS, but a CONNECTION to Christ SUSTAINS me in every SEASON.

Genesis 47:5–6 (ESV)

Jospeh realizes his brothers repented.  Because they had a reconciled relationship with Joseph they had access to the privileges of the palace.

Genesis 47:27 (ESV) 

Jospeh’s story is a picture of Jesus.  We have a Jospeh in the heavenly places and He has His eyes on His people.  We know He holds us in the palm of His hands.  Money fails but Jesus never fails. 

Creating the CONNECTION to Christ:

1. REPENT and TRUST in Him.

2. REMEMBER I’m His FAMILY.

3  RECEIVE the FATHER as my PROVIDER.

CHALLENGE: Step out in faith and do something with your money/possession this week that shows that you are trusting Him with them.
