Key Verse: Provers 18; James 3
The word of God talks a lot about the power of our words because we are made in God’s image. We don’t create things out of nothing but we can create and shape reality with our words.
Proverbs 18:20–21 (ESV
Our tongue is power. This Proverb is an analogy of what we fill our selves with is what we will speak.
My MOUTH can BURY or BUILD my life.
What we say gets into our soul. What are you saying to yourself, to your friends, to your family etc?
James 3:5 (ESV
The tongue is the most dangerous thing about us. Our words bring power or poison.
Q.What are you telling yourself about yourself ( i.e. What do you say to you about you that may cause you to doubt yourself or to be encouraged)?
Proverbs 10:14 (ESV); Proverbs 12:6 (ESV); Proverbs 10:21 (ESV)
Some people will just say whatever is on their mind. Our tongue is our worst enemy sometimes. We have power, but we need to leverage this power God has already put inside of us. We have almost unlimited potential because of our tongue.
James 3:6-10 (ESV)
If we are not intentional about this reality we can set our lives on fire. God wants us to take our words seriously. Our lives should be built up with words. We get into community to speak life into others.
To TAME the TONGUE:
1. Let GOD TEACH YOU.
God is an expert communicator. He chose to communicate through his word. Jesus is the Word made flesh, He is the communicable attribute of God. If we want to know what God is like, we should be looking at Jesus. He is the clear representation of God in all His glory. We need to learn to listen and that is how we learn to speak.
James 3:1–2 (ESV)
James is saying many should not to strive to be teachers because our mouths will get us in a whole bunch a trouble. A preacher can only reproduce what he is. Many of us should be learners.
James 1:19–21 (ESV)
We need to let someone teach us what God has declared in his word. We should not seek first to let our opinions out and speak or share whatever is on our minds. As we hear the word, a seed is implanted in us. We may not see the results tomorrow but the seeds germinate, sprout and produce fruit. When we are under the word of God we are sowing seed for a harvest in our future. The word brings healing, comfort, and restoration. The God who comforts us will never leave us.
Q. What example can you share where you have said exactly what you were thinking that you ought not to have said?
Q. How has God brought restoration, comfort, and healing to you through his word?
If you want to change what COMES OUT, change what’s PUT IN.
We need to spend time with God especially if we live with unbelievers. If we are going to be great talkers and speaker we need to let God shape our soul.
Isaiah 50:4 (ESV)
Isaiah studied the word, he received instruction.
Q. How have you brought sustaining power in someone else’s life with your words?
Q.What are some ways you get the Word of God in your soul outside of church?
A great way to get the Word in is to meditate on one verse, ask questions about that verse, and speak the verse out loud.
To TAME the TONGUE:
2. IDENTIFY the WORDS that BURY YOU.
A. GOSSIP/SLANDER.
No one will want to be friends with us and when we gossip we are annihilating another human being. Gossip is talking about someone of something that is true and slander is talking sbout someone of something that is not true.
Proverbs 20:19 (ESV)
B. LYING.
God says he hates this.
Proverbs 6:16–19 (ESV)
God hates when Christians use their tongues to separate Christians. When we drive a wedge between brothers and sisters in Christ we are playing into the devils game.
C. CURSING.
Cursing does not bring us joy, it brings us depression.
Exodus 20:7
How often do we hear the name of Jesus as a swear word? The devil knows if we can get the name of Jesus associated with cursing we will never associate His name with blessing. Another way of cursing or using the Lords name in vain is telling someone: ’the Lord told me to tell you’. Those who do that are just leveraging God’s word for their favor. This can become manipulative speech. Prophecy, when it inspires, is good. It must line up with the Bible and bring encouragement and strength.
D. QUARRELING.
2 Timothy 2:24–25 (ESV)
If someone in our lives wants to pick a fight, we should walk away. We don’t debate truth, we declare it. It someone disrespects us publicly we are not to give them audience privately.
Q. Which of these ‘burying’ words have you struggled with or can you give an example of any or all that may have affected you at one time or another?
Psalm 141:3 (ESV)
To TAME the TONGUE:
3. EMBRACE WORDS that BUILD you and OTHERS.
Words that build up: TRUTHFUL words.
We need to receive truth in order to speak truth.
Ephesians 4:15–16 (ESV)
We speak truth in love. We get strong in Christ when we get stronger in the word.
Words that build up: ENCOURAGING words.
We should be speaking courage into others. We just keep hearing about fear. Speaking fear so counter to what scripture teaches. We put courage into people not fear.
Hebrews 3:12-13 (ESV)
Q. Who have you encouraged lately?
Q. Who can you encourage more?
Words that build up: TIMELY words.
Proverbs 25:11 (ESV)
A word well spoken is timely and used to beautify the moment. We need to watch what we let out of our mouth. Ask: ‘is this helpful?’, ‘Is this appropriate?’ Sometimes no words are good words, just being there to comfort someone, mourning with someone. We need to filter the words that come out to fit the occasion.
Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)
Words that build up: PRESERVING words.
Some need others to say the right word at right time and tell them not to quit, not to give up.
Q. What personal example can you give of words spoken at just the right time to you or that you have spoken to someone else?
Colossians 4:6 (ESV)
Salt is a preservative.
To TAME the TONGUE:
4. Welcome the HOLY SPIRIT.
Mark 9:50 (ESV)
Salt is also a purifying agent. The Holy Spirit purifies us. The Holy Spirit shapes us.
1 Peter 1:22 (NKJV)
We invite the Holy Spirit in us to get purified. We cannot purify ourselves. God knew that. Jesus washes away our sins and fills us with the Holy Spirit.
Sermon Resolve:
My WORDS will be PURE and HELPFUL as my heart is PURIFIED and HELPED by God.
Challenge: Meditate on the Word. Ask God to fill you with His Spirit and give you the right words to speak at the right time to build up others.
