Key Verse: Numbers 14

James Bond No Time To Die

The Mission of Life

Numbers 14:20-24

James Bond is on a mission to save the world. There is a man in scripture named Caleb who also had a mission and he was faithful to his mission in every season of his life.  He was one of the original Israelites God brought out of Egypt. He was one of the spies Moses sent to check out the Promise Land, one of two who made it into the Promised Land.  Everyone else died in the wilderness.

My Mission is to Glorify God with my Life.

We all have a mission, we are all our trying to find our purpose.  Purpose and mission are interchangeable.  As Christians, our mission is to glorify God, by loving him and our neighbors (Matthew 22:37-39).  We are to share the Gospel to the nations.  Our mission is not a dream home or financial stability, our spouse or our children, those are blessings.  We are called to be good stewards with our blessings but ultimately they are to be used to glorify His name.  If we don’t choose Christ, we will make something else our mission.

Clip one: James Bond thinks he is retired.

We are never retired from our mission. There will always be a mission in our lives.  If we let distractions take our focus off of our mission, we will focus on something else and then that will become our mission. Our mission is not about ourselves.  We have a purpose and those without Christ are still looking for their purpose.  Nothing outside of Christ will make us happy.

Q. What is distracting you right now and taking you off mission?

Traits of a Caleb Spirit

1. Trust  the Lord not your eyes.

Numbers 13:30-33

Caleb trusted what God said, he did not care what his eyes saw but the rest of the Israelites looked at what was in front of them and saw it was scary.  Caleb did not care what he saw, according to Caleb, if God said we got this land, we got this land.  We need a faith like that where we trust God no matter what our eyes are seeing.  When tragedy comes we need a faith that trusts God. If we trust our eyes we have anger in our hearts and chaos in our minds.  We cannot be light and salt if we act like everyone on else. Fear and anxiety are sweeping through the world right now.  Trust what the Lord said not what our eyes see.  Even as believers we can still fall into this trap.  His disciples fell into that trap but God always comes through with what he says.

We all need a Caleb like Spirit in order to fulfill our mission. He whole heartedly followed and trusted the Lord.

Q. In what ways would you say you are like Caleb or not like Caleb?

Q. What are you seeing with your eyes that is keeping your from trusting what God has said in his word?

2. Don’t look back at what God brought you out of, look forward at what God is bringing you into.

Clip 2: Bond visits a loved one’s grave and he has not forgiven himself for his past.

Numbers 14:2

Israel is still looking back at what God already brought them out of.  They forgot what God had delivered them from.  They were enslaved, they were mistreated, and malnourished.  Caleb is looking forward.  We too need to look forward.  All the stuff we left is in the past (2 Corinthians 5:17).  We cannot afford to go back to what were before.  God is not going to bring something into our lives if we go back to what we were before.

Q. What do you believe God is bringing you to right now and what might be stopping Him from doing so (ie have you gone back to something you were delivered from)?

3. When life doesn’t turn out how you want it to, you trust God has you where he wants you.

Numbers 14:28-30

This passage never says Caleb is going into Promised Land tomorrow, first he had to go through forty years in the wilderness with grumbling Israelites.  He probably did not think that was what his life was going to be.

Q. What in your life does not look like you thought it would be right now (i.e., children not following the Lord, finances a mess, not the school you thought you would get into , etc.)?

Jeremiah 29:11

God has plans for our lives and we are exactly where he wants us right now.  We might not see what God is preparing us for, but we need to trust that he knows

 4. Always remember God’s promises.

Joshua 14:6-9

It is forty-five years later and Caleb still remembers a promise form 45 years earlier.  If we re going to complete God’s mission we have to remember his promises.  Our home is not here on this earth, it is in heaven for eternity if we are in Christ. Our inheritance is not on this earth.  We are to glorify his name.  We cannot get distracted as this is not our home.  We are gathering up rewards in heaven not for this life.

John 14:2-3; John 3:16; Revelation 21:4

Clip 4: Bonds sacrifices his life to save the world for the ones he loves.

Q. What are some promises of God that we read about in the Bible that encourage you today?
