Key Verse: Romans 12
Characters:
Jessica “Jess” Day | Teacher’s apple, funny glasses | a bubbly, off-beat teacher in her early thirties who is originally from Portland, Oregon. In the premiere episode, she moves into the guys’ apartment where Nick, Schmidt, and Coach help her move on from a painful break-up with her boyfriend, Spencer. Parents’ divorce when she’s an adult.
Nick Miller | beer mug, author’s notebook | Jess’s roommate who works as a bartender. At the start of the series, he struggles from a break-up with his long-term girlfriend Caroline. As much as Nick seems to be the one in the group with no direction in life, he’s the one in his family that has it together the most. Dropped out of law school & has no life direction. Loses his dad unexpectedly.
Schmidt | something for successful businessman | Jess’s roommate who is a seemingly confident ladies’ man who was obese in college. He is a successful marketing associate in a female-dominated office. Raised by an overprotective Jewish mother. Nick/Schmidt were college roommates.
Coach | personal trainer, weights, yoga mat | a cocky and driven former athlete who works as a personal trainer.
Cece | dress | a fashion model and Jess’ best friend since childhood. In spite of their differences, Cece is a very loyal and protective friend to Jess. Raised by a strict single mother. Always with unhealthy BF
Winston Bishop | basketball, cat | a former basketball player and Nick’s childhood friend from Chicago. Losing his post as point guard for a team in the Latvian Basketball League, he returns to America and moves back into the guys’ apartment in the second episode. Struggles to find a career but ultimately realizes he wants to be a cop. Raised by a single mother. Weird cat guy too.
All of these characters grow to become a family that is devoted to each other, accept one another, and inspire each other. This show, while definitely displaying questionable morals, is a demonstration of characteristics that are deeply rooted in the Christian faith: loyalty, respect, forgiveness, bearing each other’s burdens, piecing each other together when they go through rough life situations, sacrifice, and many other positive group dynamics.
Ice-breaker question:
If you were a character in this show, who would you like to be or not like to be and why?
The worldly message depicted in this show is: find yourself and live your truth with a supportive group of friends.
We all want a family of people that support us, guide us, inspire us, and challenge us. The problem with finding these things or others things in a group of people is temporary. Placing too much hope in the society of people around us will always leave us disappointed because we are not made for that. We are made to be with God and all that we need is in God. On this side of heaven we need His family: teaching, correction, joy, encouragement, support, etc.
Q. When have you put too much hope in people and been disappointed?
- The family of God is the best because: God Give Me Purpose in His Family.
Romans 12:4 ESV; Galatians 6:1-2 ESV; Galatians 6:7-10 ESV
Allowing these scriptures to change our lives may look weird to the world around us but this is how we roll in God’s family.
Clip 1: Season 3, episode 14 4:16 – 3:25 (Please note if you have Netflix, this season is free).
Jess/Cece almost get run over – then are invited to a party at Prince’s house.
Nick says I love you to Jess and she responds awfully
The guys sneak into the party (not originally invited)
Jess/Nick meet Prince, Jess is transformed by her interaction with Prince
Q. How do you find purpose in God’s family (How are you ministering to others)?
2. The family of God is the best because: Jesus Accepts Me When I Come Broken and Confused.
Clip 2: 7:00 – 6:03
Prince speaks truth to Jess’s situation. He saw clearly what Jess’s issue was, Prince was not confused.
Romans 12:3 ESV
1 Corinthians 14:33 ESV; Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
There is no confusion in God. We get burdened by our own spiritual bankruptcy. We are weighed down trying to save ourselves by being a good person, righteous, acceptable to God.
Q. What burdens are weighing you down spiritually right now?
John 6:32-35 ESV
Jesus is the bread of life. After feeding five thousand they wanted Jesus to out do Moses. Moses got manna from heaven while Israel was in the wilderness for 40 years. Old Testament manna was temporary, perishable, and only the tip of the iceberg for what God offers. Jesus is the Bread of Life – permanent, eternal, never perishing, and Jesus gives all he has.
Jess wishes she was more like Prince; Prince transforms Jess. He knows best, she tries to decline and he says: ‘Don’t argue with me.’
Colossians 3:12-17 NLT
We put on new self in Christ. Jess wished to be more like Prince and he started by clothing her and she spoke like him. We do the same who have faith in Christ, allowing Jesus to transform us, we clothe ourselves in Christ. God knows best, ‘Don’t argue Me’ is his response to us sometimes, similar to Princes response when offering Jess a dress.
Q. What ‘clothing’ listed in the above scripture reference are lacking in your ‘closet?’
3. The family of God is the best because: Anyone is Welcome.
Clip 3 2:40 – 0:20
Jess has a transformative experience with Prince and he lets her on stage to perform with him and the band. Jess then brings others to take part in something they all never thought possible. When we are transformed by God, he creates a desire in us for others to be transformed. We should want to tell our story for His glory. We should go and tell someone. Invite and keep inviting someone to church.
Q. Who have you invited lately to church?
Q. How do you share your story to others?
John 4:39-42 ESV
The woman at the well tell the town of all Jesus did for her. They came, he stayed, they believed His word. Your story for His glory.
Where do we go from here? How do we move on? Just go to work tomorrow?
What now? Follow scripture and ‘do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.’
Get baptized (Acts 18:8), Go make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), Get in the word of God (Hebrews 4:12), Serve one another Galatians 5:13), Forgive (Ephesians 4:32), Encourage (1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV).
This is a lot to do and we are not designed to do it alone. We are designed to be a body of Christ that each has a purpose in glorifying God.
Sermon in a Sentence:
Broken I come to Christ and He forgives me, transforms me, and gives me a life I never thought possible.
Romans 5:5-8 ESV; Romans 10:9-13 ESV
