Key Verse: James 1
Theme: Wisdom
We are suffering from a severe lack of wisdom in our time. America is getting stupider. It feels like we are getting dumber and the statistics have proven it so far. Americas students ranked 38 out of 71 in math and science. We are in a culture descending further and further into foolishness. We are a culture on the decline. As Christians, we need to be careful who we listen to. We need to call out the foolishness and tell God’s people to resist it. The Church is not an institution to provide us of what need to make us happy, rather it is the mission of God to spread the Gospel. There is such a lack of wisdom in the Church. God loves us and loves our minds and he wants us to discern the Truth.
What’s with all the Foolishness?
Reason #1: We are all BORN FOOLS.
Proverbs 22:15 (ESV)
Our children are fools. We are told to talk to our children and befriend them rather than discipline them. We reject scripture and embrace culture.
Q. What are some ways you may have embraced the culture in raising your children (those without children, what ways do you believe you would discipline your own children in today’s world)?
Reason #2: We DISREGARD God.
This country works seriously hard to remove the truth from God’s word from our public school system.
Romans 1:21-22 (ESV)
They did not acknowledge or worship God and became fools. We have to wake up and realize that we are not of this world. We are of the kingdom of light. Parents need to monitor what children watch, what games they play and who their friends are. We should not allow sleepovers. We need to resist the Devil and he will flee (James 4:7). Let us not follow the crowd but stand for truth.
Q. In what ways might you have ‘followed the crowd’ recently and why?
Reason #3: Many are NOT SAVED.
Most people are not saved. The best thing is to tell the truth that offends them and turn their hear to the Christ that will save them.
There are preachers that are not calling sin, sin. Our message is not to be like Jesus but come to Jesus.
Titus 3:3–5 (ESV)
We need WISDOM because FOLLY comes STANDARD.
We need wisdom in life.
Q. What are some things you are foolish about? (money, relationships, parenting, how you treat others (spouse) etc.)?
1. Wisdom is gained in the AREAS of life that REVEAL we NEED it.
James 1:4 (ESV)
James has truths we should apply to our lives at this moment. We are going to experience difficulties, trials of various kinds. There are times we will be moving into a storm, or we are in the midst of a storm, or we are coming out of a storm. If we have not experienced trials or troubles then we are dead. Christianity does not promise a life of ease. When we have trials, we gain wisdom and get over the challenge. We grow, our trials are an opportunity for our faith to grow. God wants our faith to grow not fail. Trials produce a stronger faith inside and that is something to be happy about. The truly saved will get stronger and the fakers will fall away.
Q. How have you become stronger through a trial?
Q Have you ever faced a challenge that nearly diminished your faith and how?
My reaction to life’s TESTS REVEAL a TRUE faith or EXPOSE a FALSE faith.
Judas walked with Jesus for three years but had no saving faith in Jesus. There are many like this in the Church. Our greatest commandment is to love the Lord not what he gives us. Some people’s love is not for the Lord but what He an do for them. We, as Christians, are to face the trial and believe He brought us to it to make us stronger because of it.
James 1:12 (ESV)
True saving faith is characterized by unrelenting love for Jesus no matter what happens around us or to us. We need to get back to our roots.
Our problem is that as Americans we are so use to life going the way we expect and then flip out when it does not go the way we expect.
The cause of Christ is difficult but the toughest job we will ever love. It is worth something. Everything that is worth something in our lives is hard.
Following Christ might cost us our jobs. God will not let us down. He is faithful in this life and the one to come.
Q. What are some things in life that were difficult that were worth the time/energy/money you spent (what were the rewards or benefits)?
2. Wisdom is gained when we RELY on GOD for it.
When we don’t know what to do, many go to Google and assume the first search result is right. Currently, we are being programmed to hate our country.
We are not doing our own research but relying on what someone said on tv must be right. We must go to God for wisdom to understand what is true. We need discernment. We need discernment not about what they are saying but we need discernment about the spirit that is behind what they are saying. If they say it enough times then we will believe it.
Q. Who are you gaining your wisdom from (Are you relying on news, google , or social media or are you looking to what God has to say)?
James 1:5 (ESV)
Wisdom = “the DISCIPLINE of APPLYING TRUTH to one’s life in the light of experience.”
Three Ingredients of Wisdom:
-
DISCIPLINE – A constant decision. — to get God’s truth.
-
TRUTH – God’s ready and available contribution.
-
APPLICATION – My experience (for good or bad).
We are to Get God’s Truth and apply it to our experience. There is a lot of foolishness in the Church. Only Six percent of Americans have biblical world view but 75 percent of Americans claim to be Christian.
Proverbs 4:5; Proverbs 16:16; Proverbs 2:6 (ESV)
We get wisdom and truth from God’s word. The word will save our lives a whole lot of pain. We have the truth. We are not God, He exists to do something with us. He is the Creator, Originator, and the One whom the universe revolves. Our lives are about God, not us, not our marriage, not our children. Our future is His. God gets the glory from our story. We are to read the word and apply it.
Q. What are some disciplines you need to practice so you can apply God’s truth to your current situation?
3. Wisdom is gained when we UNDERSTAND God’s GIFT of GRACE.
Proverbs 9:10 (ESV)
We honor Him, revere Him, and respect Him.
James 1:5
God gives generously to all. We are part of the word all. God knows we need him.
2 Corinthians 5:19 (ESV)
The manner in which God saves us is the manner in which he continues to relate to us graciously. We did not deserve our salvation. Salvation is the greatest gift! If salvation is the greatest gift then why do we think we need to be good enough for the lesser gifts? James was a man who understood that God gives graciously. When we turn to him for wisdom, he pours out his wisdom graciously on us.
Q. What wisdom have you gained because you had asked?
Sermon in a sentence:
The challenge I presently face is an OPPORTUNITY to experience God’s GRACE to receive His WISDOM to get STRONGER in FAITH.
Challenge: Get into the word to gain God’s truth regarding something you need wisdom about and apply it to this situation.
