Exodus 15:22-27 NIV
- Obedience to God Led Them to the Wilderness.
Exodus 13:17-18 NIV
God chose to send them the round about way. They would not have been welcomed if they went the other way. God knew they were not ready for battle so he took them the long way around. How many times do we try to take short cuts? God wants us to do life his way, but we tell him we want to do it our way. There was a shorter route for the Israelites, but they were vulnerable and not ready to fight. Now they were in the wilderness feeling alone and isolated. God knew, that if they had gone the other way, they would have wanted to turn back to where they came from, in bondage to Egypt. They would have turned to what was familiar to them.
Q. What is an example where you have gone back to what God has delivered you from because you ended up in an unfamiliar situation?
“Obedience to God will lead you into uncomfortable situations, however not nearly as uncomfortable as situations that occur as the result of disobedience.”
Examples of those who practiced disobedience where it led them to uncomfortable situations:
Jonah – due to his disobedience to God by not going to Nineveh found himself in a storm and was swallowed up by a giant fish.
Saul – God rejects him as king because he did not destroy all of the Amalekites as he was instructed to do.
Adam and Eve – responsible for the Fall of Mankind because they ate from the Trees of Knowledge that God had instructed them not to touch.
Q. What is an example where being disobedient led you to an uncomfortable situation?
2. Obedience to God Led to Their Needs Being Met.
Exodus 15:25 NIV
The people had been traveling and were hungry and thirsty. Because of their hunger and thirst, the became angry and frustrated. The water was undrinkable. They became bitter not because the water made them bitter, it was their emotional response to not having water to drink that made them bitter. Moses understood this and responded by crying out to God. Moses prayed in their crisis and God answered by supplying their need. God make the water drinkable.
“Obedience to God produces outcomes that exceed human capabilities.”
Q. What are some things you thought you could never accomplish that you had accomplished by being obedient to God?
3. Obedience to God Led to Their Protection.
Exodus 15:26 NIV
God states that if they obey He will protect them. He wanted them to listen, not just hear what He was speaking to them, but what he wanted them to obey Him. God speaks to us through His written word and his spoken word, through our leaders and pastors. We must listen and adhere to his instruction. When we are not obedient to him we are not protected.
“Obedience to God protects. Disobedience exposes.”
Q1. What are some things that have been exposed in your life because of your disobedience (i.e. Marty’s experience with sexual immorality)?
Q2. How has God protected you because of your obedience to him?
4. Obedience to God Led Jesus to Calvary.
Philippians 2:6-11 NIV
Jesus is to your life, what the wood is to the water.
Will you allow Jesus be to your life, what the wood was to the water?
