Some people come to church and have a hard time worshipping, they may wait in the lobby with an excuse why they don’t worship. They may think it’s for long-time saved people, or think they can’t sing.  We all have struggles and it is for this reason we need to talk about worship.

THEME: We are SHAPED by what we LOVE.

This can be a good or bad.  We are not creatures of logical decisions. We should not trust what we feel nor our emotions.  We are not the product of our decisions but the product of our desires.  We desire something and then make the decision to do it or get it.

BAD NEWS: Many of our DESIRES are SHAPED by the DESIRES of OTHER PEOPLE.

Q. What are some of the desires you have had that were shaped by the desires of others and turned into decisions (maybe your parents desires for you, employer, a friend, you saw someone eat on tv etc.)?

Acts 17:24–25 (ESV)

We don’t worship God because He needs it.  We worship God because WE NEED it.

True freedom is when we have a desire for someone who does not need anything from us. We want to be free and not follow the crowd.  Worship sets us free.

HE ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT NEED ANYTHING FROM US

  1. Worship consists of PHYSICAL PRACTICES which SHAPE my HEART.

Psalm 95:1(ESV); Psalm 95:6 (ESV)

“Let us make a joyful noise[ruwaʿ / roo·ah/]

Sing, bow, kneel – these are physical practices.  The Bible is telling us to make some noise for God.  It is not a suggestion.  We show strangers verbal and physical reactions out of respect.  We shake their hand, we say ‘hello’, how much more should we do this with God?  We even teach our children this. We scream and yell at a football game, or when receiving a significant gift.  We do not have an excuse to do this with God if we are believers.

A. When I SHOUT to God I DECLARE His VICTORY over every ENEMY in my life.

Q. What victories in your life resulted from your shouting out to God declaring His victory over the situation? (If you are struggling with things in your life, shout out to God and declare His victory over your problems!).

Psalm 95:6 (ESV); Proverbs 12:25 (ESV)

B. When I BOW to God I DECLARE He is LARGER than any PROBLEM in my life.

When we bow to our problems, we make them bigger than God.

Q. What are some problems you have faced that required you to bow down and completely surrender them to God (maybe something you could not let go of etc)?  Did bowing down and surrendering make you see that God is bigger than your problems?

2. Worship consists of singing BIBLICAL CONFESSIONS which INFORM my MIND.

Psalm 95:4-5 (ESV)

Chicago Tribune 2018, “The Health Benefits of Singing a Tune.”

  1. Relieves Stress. // Is a natural antidepressant.
  2. Improves the Immune System. // Lung exercise.
  3. Alleviates Snoring.
  4. Reduces Loneliness
  5. Improves Memory.

Q. Which of these health benefits have you experienced from singing songs of worship?

Numbers 10:10 (ESV); Isaiah 66:23 (ESV)

“PSALM CATEGORIES”

Praise, Trust, Thanksgiving, Hymn, Wisdom, Royal and Lament.

Lament is the mot popular category.  Lamenting is okay, but we should not live there.  If we don’t praise we are lamenting.  When things are breaking down, we should begin to sing.

3. Worship SOFTENS my HEART to HEAR God’s VOICE and OPENS my MIND to RECEIVE His Word.

Q. What are some examples you can share of how worship has helped you hear God’s voice (Maybe something you had been praying about was made clear through worship)?

Psalm 95:7 (ESV)

After they started worshipping, God stepped in and spoke..

Colossians 3:16 (ESV); John 6:35 (ESV)

IF WE WANT TO HEAR GOD’S VOICE, WE HAVE TO OPEN OUR MOUTHS AND SING.

TEXT A PIC OF YOU AND YOUR  NEW APPRENTICE THROUGH THIS SUNDAY AND I WILL HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU! IT MUST BE AN APPRENTICE WHO HAS NOT YET BEEN NAMED TO ME  (AND OF COURSE HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO YOUR COACH)
