When lives are being changed there is a need for laborers. Our church is growing and there is a harvest in front of us. We need more workers as we go out and bring the Gospel to people. We are in a campaign starting this week for 500 new Serve-Team members. Sign up to serve and receive a limited edition T-Shirt.
Pride has become a virtue. June is pride month celebrating ‘Me’ but it’s a good time to celebrate humility. One thing God hates is pride.
Non-Christians should be prideful because they come from the world, but we as Christians are not those who revel in pride. We are new creations, washed by the blood, and set apart for God’s purposes. We are here to celebrate Jesus!
Proverbs 8:14 ESV; Proverbs 16:5 ESV; James 4:6 ESV
We are not proud people, we are called to humble ourselves and seek God’s grace. Humility is how we get great in God.
Humus is dirt. It makes up good soil. It is the “dark organic materials in soils” produced by the decomposition of vegetable or animal matter and essential to the fertility of the earth.
HUMUS (Latin) =
HUMAN / HUMILITY / HUMOR
Humility is the ability to laugh at myself.
Jesus wanted to redeem mankind because he loves us. In this passage of scripture, He is telling his disciples what was going to happen to Him. Then a funny moment happens when James and John say “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” They did not understand (even after Jesus explained it to them for the third time, this time being in more detail) what Jesus was trying to tell them. They were being foolish. They struggled with faith as we do. Some times we need to look back on our foolishness and laugh at ourselves. We need to take ourselves lightly and laugh at ourselves.
Ice-breaker question:
Q. What have you had to laugh at yourself about?
1. HUMILITY IS NOT THINKING LESS OF YOURSELF, HUMILITY IS THINKING OF YOURSELF LESS.
Mark 10:33 ESV; Mark 10:35 ESV
James and John were so hungry for position they didn’t even see what Jesus was talking about. Thinking about others and not ourselves can be the best healing for us through our struggles.
Q. How has serving others helped you through your own struggles?
HUMILITY REMEMBERS:
I AM MADE OF DUST BUT FASHIONED IN THE IMAGE OF THE DIVINE.
Today we are getting more narcissistic and more suicidal, especially our teens. This is because we focus on ourselves and get depressed.
Q. What personal experience have you encountered where someone (perhaps yourself) had become so focused on themselves where it led to depression?
2. HUMILITY IS THE GATEWAY TO GOD’S PURPOSE FOR ME.
We are dirt but we are God’s dirt. He has a pot for us. James and John wanted to be at the top. But Jesus asked them if they were able to drink the cup of suffering and be baptized with the baptism of suffering (to be swallowed up in death). He was asking them if they could handle that? He was asking if they were ready to die and suffer.
IN GOD’S ECONOMY: HUMILITY PRODUCES PURPOSE.
Humility is usually the place we find our purpose. We don’t usually choose it. God has to humble us. He can’t use us if we are full of ourselves. He removes our confidence and fills us with His confidence.
Mark 10:39 ESV; Mark 10:42 -44ESV
Those who God uses, He wounds deeply. We find new purpose in the pain God brings us through.
Q. What humbling process has God led you to and brought you through and how had it produced in you ‘purpose’?
3. HUMILITY EMBRACES SERVING GOD’S PURPOSE TO CHANGE LIVES.
HUMILITY SAYS, “I’M THE PURCHASED POSSESSION OF GOD TO ACCOMPLISH HIS LIFE-CHANGING PURPOSE FOR THE WORLD.”
To change lives we need to serve.
Q. How has serving changed your life? If you are not serving, what is holding you back? What are some talents/gifts God has blessed you with that could be used for His glory?
