Key Verse: 1 Samuel 17
Hacksaw Ridge is based on a true story about Desmond Doss, a Conscience Objector who joins the army to become a medic. He was Seventh Day Adventist and did not believe using violence. He was wrongly placed in a front line unit and because of his convictions, the soldiers hated him. He spends a night on Hacksaw Ridge and saves 75 men from certain death. The very men who hated him, he was sent to save. The movie preaches the Gospel without mentioning Jesus.
Desmond is getting harassed and he turns to 1 Samuel 17. The story of David and Goliath which is much like his story. An unarmed man takes down a great enemy and saves his brothers from certain death.
Q. How do you handle those who ‘harass’ you about your convictions? Are you more or less like a Desmond Doss?
The story of David and Goliath is our story and how we overcome our fears.
The Bible paints a very detailed visual of Goliath because he represents . more than just this ancient giant of a Philistine. The text is deliberate to show us what he looks like. He is coming against the people of God and shutting them up with fear and intimidation. He is 6 cubits tall, the tip of his spear is 600 shekels in weight and he has 6 pieces of armor on his body. 666. This is not just a symbol of an old man from ancient times, this is a symbol of our great enemy Satan. This is our story. We face a Goliath. He is the enemy of our souls and he wants to fill us with fear, intimidate us and taunt us.
For forty days this went on. The number forty, is the biblical number of testing. All Israel was hiding in fear from this Giant. Even Saul, their King was hiding. The world was not working for them, even their government was not working for them. We are under tests, the enemy of our souls trying to test us, bring down, discourage us. Our trust is higher than any elected official, we have Jesus who is enthroned at the right hand of the Father, and He has all authority and power of us and nothing will happen to us outside of His control.
Q. What tests might you be going through where the enemy is testing you and bringing you down? How does knowing that nothing can happen to you outside of Jesus’s control help you through your discouragement?
David, not even in the battle shows up because he is running an errand for his father. David’s father sent him into war. He brings the cheeses and bread and he hears the taunt of Goliath again as saying that who ever wins will rule over the other nation.
David was not well liked by his brothers. He was a sheep herder, anointed by God in the midst of his brothers and they resented him for it.
The underdog of all underdogs, wins! He stood out from all the others even when no one believed in him. As in Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond’s father, his fellow soldiers, and even his captain was against him. Who goes into battle this way? Where are we in this story of David and Goliath? It is hard to stand out. It is hard to be a Christian in the workplace.
Q. What are some things you come up against at work that require you to stand out as a Christian?
1. WE ALL HAVE FEARS.
Three Main Categories of FEAR:
1. Not having enough (money/jobs).
2. Not finding love (or losing it).
3. Death (ours or others).
Q. What, out of these 3 categories, do you fear the most and why? Is there another fear you have that is not listed?
2. THE ANSWER TO OUR FEARS IS NOT A PROGRAM BUT A PERSON.
Because of what Jesus did at the cross 2000 years ago, we can have assurance that we are saved from our enemy, the Devil.
Q. What programs have you put your trust in only to find that they have failed you?
3. VICTORY OVER OUR FEARS WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY OUR TRUE SON OF DAVID, JESUS CHRIST.
Because David took down the Number One of their enemies, they were able to overcome all of their enemies, just like us! Because of what Jesus did for us, we are able to overcome whatever comes against us.
NOW WE HAVE
IN CHRIST: ASSURANCE.
1. We Will Always Have Enough. God is our Father.
2. We Ere Eternally Love. The Father Gave His Son.
3. WE Have Eternal Life. The Son Took Our Death.
